STIVERS WINS WITH "REAL" HORSEPOWER

Pro Mod drag racer and Kentucky-based entrepreneur Rick Stivers' love of horsepower grew by $300,000 this week when his yearling Thoroughbred Racehorse sold at the 90th annual Selected Yearlings Sale at Saratoga, New York on August 2.

The filly, born January 18, 2009, was sired by 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense and birthed by Gwinnett, the great-granddaughter of 1977 Triple-Crown winner Seattle Slew.

"The filly has a whole lot of potential because her pedigree is so strong," said Stivers. "It'll be really exciting to see how well she does as she grows and is trained.

"There were really a lot of great horses in this year's class, so she will definitely have some good competition in the future," he added.

The two-day auction saw 118 horses and netted more than $32 million in total with an average price on the day of Stivers' Filly's sale at $254,000. At $325,000, the Filly was well above average, owing largely to her renowned lineage.

"Of course a sale like this is a great boost for me and my family, but it's also a good mark for our breeding program and strategy in the stables. Just like drag racing is much more than just stepping on the gas, Thoroughbred farming takes a lot to get a great horse.  This filly will be one to watch," he added.
