UPDATED: NMCA Nostalgia Pro Street competitor Barbara Nesbitt remains in intensive care at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte after sustaining injuries when the drivetrain in her ’68 Camaro let go just as she crossed the finish line at nearby zMAX Dragway in Concord, North Carolina.

Nesbitt reportedly has several contusions on the right side of her body after the car’s driveshaft or other parts entered the cockpit and struck her. Among her internal injuries are a lacerated, but not bleeding, liver and bruised lung, as well as possibly a broken leg and perhaps several broken ribs, as extensive swelling is apparently making x-rays difficult to read with certainty.

Of immediate concern is a shattered right elbow and Nesbitt is awaiting the arrival of an orthopedic surgeon to evaluate her condition and begin reconstruction.

Everyone at Attitude’s CompetitionPlus.com joins the entire drag racing community in wishing Nesbitt a quick and complete recovery.

competitor Barbara Nesbitt suffered injuries to her right arm when the drivetrain in her ’68 Camaro let go just as she crossed the quarter-mile finish line.

Nesbitt, from Lombard, Illinois, managed to pop the chutes and bring her brand-new, Skinny Kid-built race car to a safe stop on the track after some sort of mechanical failure broke the car’s driveshaft and it or another piece of debris entered the cockpit and struck her arm.

She was conscious and alert when helped from the car by rescue personnel on the scene, then immediately transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of unknown injuries.

We’ll post an update on Nesbitt’s condition as soon as possible. (She won the round, by the way.)
