FIVE WORLD CHAMPIONS AT THIS WEEKEND’S MMPSA EVENT

The Mountain Motor Pro Stock Association, the fledgling series showcasing factory hot rods, could have written off their Martin, Mich.-based event as a failure when rain washed away their original May date. Little did the promoters know their rescheduled date would be a blessing in disguise.

This weekend’s event, July 9-10, at U.S. 131 Dragway will attract as many as five past world champions who couldn’t attend on the original date due to scheduling conflicts.

Those scheduled to appear include John Montecalvo, Steve Spiess, Brian Gahm, Pete Berner and John Nobile.

Those scheduled to appear include John Montecalvo, Steve Spiess, Brian Gahm, Pete Berner and John Nobile.

Of the five, Nobile will be participating outside of the cockpit. His son Vincent Nobile, a licensed NHRA Pro Stock racer, will make his competition debut at the event albeit with a 500-inch engine powering his Ford Mustang.

“This is going to be a ‘who’s who’ of Mountain Motor Racing,” said Tommy Dupree of the MMPSA. “It’s always tough to reschedule an event, but I am very excited to have all these past world champions back together again. You add them to the already stellar line up of the MMPSA regular contenders and you have a door car fan’s dream!”

MMPSA qualifying begins Friday at 5pm with two more runs following at 7 and 9pm. Saturday will see one more qualifying session at 2pm with eliminations following at 4pm.
