HINES STILL SEEKING RIGHT TIME TO TEST PS CAR

hinesAndrew Hines is going to attempt to obtain a license in a Pro Stock car, but finding the right time and place to make it happen has been difficult.

Hines, who won Pro Stock Motorcycle world championships from 2004-2006, was going to make some runs in the John Gaydosh Jr. Performance Pontiac GTO at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan., May 25, but that didn’t take place because Gaydosh hurt the motor in the car in his last qualifying run at the NHRA Southern Nationals in Commerce, Ga., May 15.

“We were trying to do something around Englishtown (last weekend), but we couldn’t get anything going,” said the 27-year-old Hines. “Then, we were thinking maybe Monday (June 28) after Norwalk (Ohio), but Norwalk is not going to hold a test session now. We’re still trying to figure it out, everything is up in the air, but we will get something figured out sooner or later.”

We’re still trying to figure it out, everything is up in the air, but we will get something figured out sooner or later.”

Gaydosh of Baltimore, Md., competed in Pro Stock at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals this past weekend, but the Pro Stock Motorcycle class wasn’t scheduled to race at Bristol.

According to Hines, Gaydosh also is scheduled to race at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Norwalk June 24-27. Hines will be piloting his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson at Norwalk, but since Norwalk isn’t having a test session on June 28, that weekend will not work for Gaydosh and Hines.

“It’s all logistics right now,” Hines said. “We’re just trying to get the car and us at the same place at the same time with a track that’s open (for testing). The tough thing is that he (Gaydosh) has a normal, everyday job and that makes things a little tougher.”

Hines, however, hasn’t lost his enthusiasm about getting a Pro Stock license in Gaydosh’s machine.

“The plan is to get this done,” Hines said. “I’ve got my HANS (device), and all the safety equipment I’ve never had before and I’m ready to go. It’s just a matter of being in the right place at the right time.”

Hines did get a small taste of being a Pro Stock driver during the O’Reilly Auto Parts Spring Nationals in Houston April 9-11, as he warmed up Gaydosh’s car a few times.

“I’ve just been watching all the coverage on TV,” Hines said. “I’ve been watching the in-car cameras to see what guys do on their normal procedure, when they flip switches and how they sit in their car when they’re sitting at the tree. All those in-car camera shots really do a lot for me. It’s kind of like when I was growing up and watching my brother (Matt) race the motorcycle. I watched him from the starting line hundreds of times. I watched what guys were doing from their staging procedure, burnout procedure, and everything. I tried to soak up as much information as I could just by watching that stuff.”

Matt Hines is the crew chief for Andrew and Ed Krawiec on the Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson team. Matt won 30 career Pro Stock Motorcycle national events and three NHRA championships from 1997-99.

Andrew says he has been getting a positive response from Pro Stock drivers about his desire to try their class.

“I’ve talked to Greg Anderson a little bit and he said once we get closer to firming up this deal, when it’s going to happen, he would help me out and give me some pointers here and there. Everybody in the class is really excited about this happening. They think it’s pretty cool that a bike guy wants to come and play in a car, and I’ve received nothing but good words from everybody out there. Everybody is really looking forward to this as much as I am, I think.”

Beyond getting a Pro Stock license, Andrew isn’t making any future Pro Stock plans.

“Right now, I want to do it (drive a Pro Stock car) to see if I can,” Andrew said. “I do not see it going anywhere from there right now. I’ve always admired those guys (Pro Stock drivers) and I want to see what it’s like. I got this opportunity and I wasn’t about to let it go between my fingers.”

Andrew’s is currently focused on trying to win another Pro Stock Motorcycle world title. Andrew is fourth in the point chase, 138 behind leader and defending class champion Hector Arana. Krawiec, Hines’ teammate, is seventh in the point standings.

“We’ve been struggling a little bit,” Andrew said. “We’ve been having a hard time finding the tuneup on the track and it seems like our bike has just been off for the last three or four races. We have stuff in the works at the shop and we might do some testing next week here at ORP (O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis) on Tuesday maybe, and see what happens. That’s all tentative right now. We’re in our shop working on the bikes. We have the bikes working good off the starting line, we just have to get them to work good down track. It seems like once we got them to work good off the starting line, we lost our finish line tuneup.”
