BARKLAGE BROTHERS RACING FOR A CAUSE

Pro Mod racers and brothers Zach and Cody Barklage will be racing this Independence Day holiday for a greater cause then just winning a race.  The team will be racing for a cure for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society during the ADRL Hardee’s Independence Drags IV at Heartland Park Topeka.

“We have decided to race for more than just points and purse money,” said Zach Barklage.  “There are a lot of greater causes in this world and this happens to be one of them.  Our team has been touched by leukemia, so we wanted to do our part to help raise money and awareness.  A friend of our team, Michelle Royal, has suffered three times with leukemia.  She’s now in a coma and not doing very well.  She is a very nice person, and has had it pretty rough.  This was the only thing we knew we could do to help.  Once we got involved we were amazed to know over 1,500 people in just Missouri and Kansas died from blood cancer just last year.  Only $1000 will give 10 children a whole month of their cancer medication, and we’re out here spending a lot more than that to race.  That blows me away to know if we all come together; we can save people’s lives.”

“Michelle [Royal] has been a friend of our team for years now and we felt the need to help her out and race in her honor,” added Cody Barklage.  “She has fought harder for her life in the past few years than most people will ever have to.  We want to honor her courage and strength.  We also want to help The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  We know The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has always been there to offer assistance to Michelle when she needed it, and we want to aid them to continue to help those who need them.  We also want to see them find a cure for blood cancer.  Almost 150 people die from blood cancer in the United States every single day.  That is 150 people too many.  The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has some of the best scientist in the world working on a cure, some of which are even here in Missouri.  Every four minutes, someone new is diagnosed with blood cancer.  With those odds, I think it’s important to support the mission of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.”

“Everyone on our team is getting involved,” Cody Barklage went on to say.  “Our PR Rep, is training for a ½ marathon for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  It’s part of their Team in Training program.  Michelle is a very close friend of hers and how our team got to know Michelle, so this has been a special cause to her as well.  I know there is a website our PR Rep has to help raise money, but we will also be taking donations at the track.  We’ve also talked to another team to join forces with in our fundraising efforts.  The Top Fuel Funny Car driver, “Fast” Jack Beckman is behind us 100%.  He won his battle with lymphoma several years ago and now is committed to helping The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  He just won The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Man of the Year award in his area.  Hopefully, you will see us join forces more in the future with “Fast” Jack Beckman and The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.”{

“Of course we will be thinking about the race,” said Zach Barklage.  “We will need to qualify well, go rounds, and like every race we want to do as well as we can.  But more importantly for this race, we want to make a difference for everyone affected by blood cancer.  We want to honor our friend Michelle and the thousands like her who are fighting every day, and the thousands who courageously lost their fight.  We hope to raise a lot of money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  The skies are the limit there.  Drag Racers and Drag Race fans always come together for worthy causes, and this one is very worthy.  So hopefully, for Topeka – the first of our two hometown races, we will get both Lucas Oil / Goodyear cars well into the field and hopefully we will be able to raise thousands for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.”
