When it comes to Top Fuel drag racing, there’s very little Tony Schumacher hasn’t 1021-03998accomplished.

The seven-time world champ did claim a first Sunday, however, when he won his first race at Topeka, Kan.

Schumacher captured the 22nd annual O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Summer Nationals title by scoring a hole shot win over his teammate, Cory McClenathan, in the final round at Heartland Park.

Schumacher clocked a 3.875-second run in the finals, compared to McClenathan’s 3.864 effort. The difference was Schumacher’s .058 reaction time, over McClenathan's .074.

“Cory is a great driver and we gave a great race, and we knew it was going to be inches (to determine the winner),” said Schumacher, who beat McClenathan by two feet.  A “58 to a 74 light, he wasn’t late. The season is determined by what time and what day you pick to have the right light.”

This is Schumacher’s third win of the season. What’s more, this is Schumacher’s 64th career victory and the 100th NHRA win for the U.S. Army as a sponsor.

“That was just amazing, it was a heck of a day to go out and have to beat Cory, and beat (Larry) Dixon the round before and Shawn Langdon before that,” Schumacher said. “That’s what racing is about. That’s why you get up in the morning. I say it every time, it’s not the trophy at the end of the day, it’s getting up Sunday morning, knowing you’re going to have to dig real deep to get it, and that’s what we did today. That was a great team effort.”

Schumacher’s won 60 times for the U.S. Army, Don Prudhomme won 24 in his Army-sponsored Funny Car and Angelle Sampey and Antron Brown won 10 and six races, respectively, on their Army-sponsored Suzuki Pro Stock Motorcycles. Schumacher also had four Top Fuel event wins with Exide Batteries as his sponsor.

“We needed to get this 100th win for the U.S. Army, and we needed to win here (at Topeka),” said Schumacher, who began his Top Fuel career in 1996. “It has been a great career, but there are two tracks I had not won at, here (at Topeka), and Atlanta, and now I have Atlanta left. So, I still have time in my career to go out and do that. I enjoy those big moments where you have to really pull something off.”

Actually, Schumacher’s final round against McClenathan didn’t start off like he wanted.

“I did the burnout and it set the timers off,” Schumacher said. “I was backing up and the clutch was engaged and I thought, ‘what is going on here?’  It had air pressure and you look at all the normal stuff and I was thinking when I stage this thing is it going to try and slide. It got my heartbeat up, and apparently that helped. I’m going to have to do that every time.”
