Things couldn’t be going much better of late for Robert Hight.

The reigning Funny Car world champ won at St. Louis and Commerce, Ga., and then captured the pole Saturday at Topeka with his 4.095-second effort at 308.21 mph on Friday night. Both are track records.

Those numbers were untouchable Saturday because of the hot and windy conditions.

“It’s definitely tricky driving in this wind,” Hight said. “I do not believe it’s a direct head wind, I think it is kind of at an angle and if you get to moving a little bit it really wants to push you around.”

This was Hight’s third pole of the season, fourth at Topeka and 35th in his career.

Hight also was thrilled with his 4.158-second run in the third round of qualifying.

“That broke their backs, that was pretty stout,” said Hight, who drives for John Force Racing. “What gives me confidence is Jimmy (Prock) came back and looked at that, and said we could have run quicker. It’s not like it’s on the ragged edge every run, and we’re just getting away with it. We were actually trying to run hard that last run and it just didn’t work out.”

Thanks to sitting on the pole, Hight will receive an opening-round bye run because there were only 15 Funny Car drivers entered at Topeka.

“We will get a single the first round Sunday and we will probably try to push pretty hard and try to maintain lane choice for second round,” Hight said. “We’re going to have a tough match-up in second round because it’s either going to be Ashley (Force-Hood) or Del (Worsham). There are no easy rounds, and even as good as we’re running it’s going to be tough, but we’re going to see if we can make it three in a row.”
