As expected, there were no changes atop the Pro Stock qualifying ladder.

Mike Edwards, the reigning world champ ran a 6.638-second time at 206.99 mph on Friday night and it held for him to grab the No. 1 qualifying spot.

The time and the mph were both Heartland Park track records. This is Edwards’ seventh pole of the season, 29th of his career and second in a row at Topeka. No one was a threat to unseat Edwards because of the windy and warm conditions Saturday.

“I was grabbing my hat most of the day,” Edwards said. “Underneath the tunnel up there (at the tower) it was a little gusty to say the least. I’m not sure I’ve seen conditions go from like they did from Friday to Saturday. I’ve seen them go the other way were they got way better. It’s one thing to see the conditions change, but when you kick up a 30 to 35 mph head wind, that’s tough to deal with. Thank goodness it was almost a dead head-on wind because if it was a side wind, I don’t think we would race. I think it would be too dangerous for us to race. You can just feel the car and it (the wind) is so head-on, the car just doesn’t know which way to go. You don’t really steer it.”

Although Edwards has won four races this season, and he has a 246-point lead over second place Allen Johnson, he isn’t taking anything for granted.

“This is going to be challenging,” Edwards said. “Hopefully, we will be able to do the best job Sunday and see what happens. If you look back over last year until this year, really the only way that car loses is me. We have an awesome team and we have an awesome car. So, I just have to do the best I can do, and hopefully it will be good enough. The weather is supposed to be pretty much the same Sunday, so it’s going to be whoever makes the best adjustments is going to win this race, not necessarily the fastest car.”
