MONTECALVO READY TO TAKE ON THE 1320 AS REIGNING CHAMP

dsb_2557_20100320_1163847192Quarter-mile Mountain Motor Pro Stock racing is still very much alive and is ready to hit the track again this coming weekend at Rockingham Dragway with the MMPSA’s inaugural event. John Montecalvo, who clinched his first ever IHRA Championship last fall at Rockingham, will be wearing the #1 in the MMPSA and looking to defend his reign as the quarter-mile champ.

“Rockingham Dragway is the place where I’ve had the most success,” told Monte. “The highlight of my career was winning the Championship there last fall, so now I think it’s only fitting to come back to Rockingham for the start of this new organization. Quarter-mile Mountain Motor racing is a longstanding and well-loved tradition in drag racing and I really think we racers need to make sure this type of racing continues for generations to come.”

The MMPSA kickoff is entitled ‘Rumble at the Rock’ and is the feature of Rockingham Dragway’s Civil Wars event, which is also host to Quick 8 and bracket races, a car show and a gigantic swap meet.

“This should be a great event at Rockingham,” Monte continued, “and I’ve got my own civil war going on with a certain blue Mustang. Elijah Morton [based out of NC] and I have an ongoing rivalry at Rockingham and I can’t wait to line up against him in another battle of North vs. South.

“We looked good at the ADRL race in Houston a few weeks back. We had good speed in the eighth, but the real test is how good our speed will be on the quarter. This separates the men from the boys. With our best record at Rockingham and on the quarter-mile I feel pretty confident heading into this first MMPSA race.

“I want to thank everyone for their concern and phone calls with regard to Tommy.   He’s in a rehab center that specializes in back injuries. Everything points to a full recovery and we hope to have him back in the near future.  In Houston, all the racers and crew signed a "Get Well" poster for Tommy.  You can see that it meant a lot to him as he has it hanging in his room".
