Facing stiff competition from other competitors such as Charlie Wescott, Daniels blistered the all-concrete South Georgia Motorsports Park quarter mile during the NHRA Southern National Open.  He set the record with a 8.294 at 160.08 mph.  His backup run was 8.313 at 159.31.  Daniels sixty foot time was 1.153 on the record run.

The previous record was an 8.331.

Daniels ran three 8.20s during the Dutch Classic in Reading, Pa., but since those runs came after the first round of eliminations, they were not eligible for world record consideration. (Phil Hubbard Photo)
