SECOND-GENERATION SMITH WINS CAN-AM SS TITLE

Victoria Smith won the 2009 Can-Am Stock/Super Stock Championship on Sunday, October 18. In a points chase that came down to the final race, the VSmithtop eight racers all had a chance at winning. This marked her second championship since 2006.

"This was the tightest points battle the series has ever had. I was nervous going into the last race, knowing so many racers would be ready to take advantage of any mistake I made," said Smith, who is the daughter of Canadian Super Stock legend F.J. Smith.

"The series has gotten incredibly competitive, so this is very rewarding," she continued. "In fact, in our 11 events, we had 20 different racers make final round appearances.

"The series has gotten incredibly competitive, so this is very rewarding," she continued. "In fact, in our 11 events, we had 20 different racers make final round appearances.

"I could not have done this without my father/crew chief/engine builder/chassis builder, F.J. Smith, my #1 crew guy Murray Daniel, and of course my mother, Betsy, who does so much work behind the scenes on the series."

This season was the best yet for the Can-Am series, with 33 points members, a series-high race turnout of 49 cars for the annual Labour Day Nationals, and an average turnout of 32 cars per race.

"With the way the economy was this year, we found that our format of one day-one race was very appealing to racers. We keep the races to one day, keep the entry reasonable, and pay all that money back to the participants," said F.J. Smith of the series' title sponsor Smith Performance Specialties.

The top ten finishers are as follows:
1. Victoria Smith - 23
2. Kirk Vanni - 20
3. Tony Valerio - 19
   Dan Velenosi - 19
   Bill Little - 19
6. Austin Ward - 18
7. Vince Giglio - 17
   Rob Becker 17
