A MOTHER IS GRATEFUL FOR DRAG RACING’S SAFETY

Thousands of race fans held their breath as the ADRL’s safety crew worked feverishly to extract Jason Hamstra, the 22-year old Pro Extreme driver who hamstracrashed during last Friday’s Speedtech Battle for the Belts competition.

One of those holding her breath was not your average race spectator.

It was Jason’s mother, Karen Hamstra; who on Thursday spoke about her son’s accident.

“He’s doing well,” she said. “He came out of the ordeal in good shape, not even a concussion.”

One of those holding her breath was not your average race spectator.

It was Jason’s mother, Karen Hamstra; who on Thursday spoke about her son’s accident.

“He’s doing well,” she said. “He came out of the ordeal in good shape, not even a concussion.”

After the crash, Jason was transported via helicopter to Parkland Hospital in Dallas for observation, and Sunday was home recuperating.

Other than some minor bruises, the young racer suffered no other  injuries.

The matriarch of the Hamstra clan credits the latest in safety equipment for saving her son’s life.

“We’ve got the latest in safety equipment,” she said, “and it did its stuff.”

As thankful as she was for the safety equipment, she offered appreciation to those who assisted the shocked team after the accident.

“I want to thank everybody that helped,” said Hamstra. “I would like to especially thank Kenny Doak. He just jumped right in there and helped us. We also want to thank the EMS attendants, the fire fighters, the ADRL and Texas Motorplex crew, along with the doctors and staff at Parkland Hospital.

“Thank you to Kenny Nowling who drove over an hour to the hospital at 2 a.m. to check on Jason. And, a special thank you to Jason’s number one fan Brian Olson for his prayers and support.  Thank you also to Dad, Mom, Andy, Phil, Justin, the Barklages, the Tutterows, and everyone else who came to our need.”

According to Karen, over 600 emails were sent to the team offering prayers and concern.

Any well wishes can be sent to Jason at promod@midwaynet.net
