When in Egypt, you walk like an Egyptian.
Likewise when you’re racing with a Ford-sponsored team, you don’t come to the dance with a Chevrolet.
That being said, Daniel Wilkerson is competing this weekend with a Shelby Cobra Mustang loaned from teammate Bob Tasca III. Memphis marks the second event in 2009 for the second-generation Wilkerson, who ran Topeka with his father’s old Impala Funny Car body.

“After we ran Topeka, it was decided that we needed to have a Ford Shelby Mustang on the car,” said Bob Wilber, team publicist. “Bob Tasca completely agreed with us and loaned us a body. He told us to strip the design from the body and we did.”
The car is painted identical to Tim Wilkerson’s Levi, Ray & Shoup Shelby Cobra Mustang.
Wilkerson outqualified his father in first day qualifications at the NHRA Midsouth Nationals with the eighth quickest lap of Funny Car with a 4.118 at 302.01. Tim was 11th with a 4.130.
“That’s the car I ran last year,” Tim Wilkerson pointed out. “That’s a darn good car and is about 50 pounds lighter. I’m proud of the boy. It’s going to be a good weekend for him.”
