ANALYZING THE FOUR-WIDE RACES

The key to winning a four-lane drag race is no different than a standard two lane match. One has to leave the starting line quickly and a quicker elapsed time doesn’t hurt, either.

Reaction time made the most difference when it came down to winning the pair of four-wide nitro drag race exhibitions staged on Sunday at the NHRA Carolinas Nationals in Concord, NC.

Both winners in the exhibition runs were the quickest of their pairings out of the gate.

Funny Car winner Mike Neff strapped a .02 holeshot (.074 reaction) on the second quickest leaver Del Worsham. John Force and Tim Wilkerson were the second two off of the starting line.

Spencer Massey was the quickest of the Top Fuel dragsters with a .028 reaction and his .058 starting line advantage beat out Brandon Bernstein, the second quickest leaver. Antron Brown was third out of the gate ahead of Morgan Lucas.

Force provided the quickest elapsed time of the Funny Cars with a 4.118 at 307.68 mph. Neff was second quickest with a 4.136.

Brown laid down the quickest elapsed time of the dragsters with a 3.864 at 315.74. What made his run most impressive is that he did it on a “green” lane-four.

Massey won the dragster portion from lane two, the right lane of the regular strip.

Neff won from the lane two.
