Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd Int'l Raceway, Pippin had yet to win a round. Race after race Pippin bowed out in the first round as he struggled to find the right combination for his Buell.

All that changed when Pippin, qualified 14th, roared down the quarter-mile beating Andrew Hines on a hole shot. Pippin's .027 light versus Hines .073 gave him just enough advantage to hold old the more powerful V-Rod ridden by Hines.

Pippin was literally walking on air back at his trailer following the round win, his first ever.

Pippin was literally walking on air back at his trailer following the round win, his first ever.

“Well it’s the first round in NHRA motorcycle,” Pipping clarified, adding, “And to beat one of them V-Rods with the horsepower advantage that we all know they have. They didn't set the dial just right, but they let me get out on him and he couldn't catch me. It's a great day for us.

“I just want to thank PiranaZ, Stone Mountain Harley Davidson, Greg and Laurie Becker, Calwell Tools and S&S. Thank God for S&S, because if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be here because I won’t drive a Jap bike; I’m a V-twin guy. You can’t buy that junk that Harley sells.”

Its been over 18 months since Pippin came into the NHRA. A very long 18 months.

“We started full time last year. So, we've been a year, all last year and never made a round, and this is the first round and to put one of those V-Rods out just makes my day.

“I just knew I had to cut a light and just hope for the best. We've been off on the tune up and I guess we nailed it right there in the first round. All of these guys have been working so hard this year, so this is as much for them as it is for me.”

A nose to the grindstone type of guy, Pippin expected he would need a little luck on his side to garner the first round win. In fact, he was almost certain Hines had enough horsepower to overcome the hole shot advantage.

“I could hear him and I was getting closer to the finish line and I was expecting him to come then I realized that he ain’t going to make it. And it's a good feeling I don't mind telling you. It’s just incredible I don’t really know what to say.”

Like water bursting from a dam, Pippin went all the way to the finals before a red light against Hector Arana brought an end to what was almost a near perfect afternoon. Following Hines, Pippin dispatched Shawn Gann and then Craig Treble before meeting Arana in the final round, another first, of course.
