TODD PLEASANTLY SURPRISED

J.R. Todd was as surprised as the next person when his 3.881 seconds, 312.06 mph run held up against the best

“That is good medicine for any pain, right there,” said Todd, a part time driver on a part time team. “It surprised me. I knew it was a good run when it left. I figured someone would come out and run a low 80 but I didn't think it would be us. It surprised the crap out of me.”

When asked, Todd admitted he was as surprised the run held up as much as he was making the run.

When asked, Todd admitted he was as surprised the run held up as much as he was making the run.

“A little of both,” said Todd. “We're a part time team and for being as many runs as we are behind, that is a huge run for this team. As far as I know, it's their career best to 1000 feet. I know it's my career best. I figured Schumacher or Dixon could go 80 flat or dip into the 70's, as well as Antron, but hey, our 81 held up and I think its going to hold up throughout the weekend. I am looking forward to race day now.”

For Todd and car owner David Baca, who was not in attendence, running well at Infineon Raceway means friends and family are on hand to witness the feat.

“It's a good start to the weekend, so far.”

In the future, Todd hopes to scrape up the funds to be able to run with the team at Indy and with Baca and Mach 1 maybe the team will run, Dallas, Vegas and the season ender in Pomona.

All plans are dependent on money and the possible sale of the team. Todd confirmed the team was for sale but any further information needed to come from Baca, who is expected at the track on Saturday.

FAST, BUT NOT FASTEST –
Even though the NHRA doesn't keep records as the competitors race to 1000 feet, there are records available. J.R. Todd's 312 mph run is not the fastest run by a dragster to the 1000 foot mark. That honor belongs to Antron Brown, the current point leader, who ran a 319.75 at Bristol earlier this year.
