NHRA JDRL EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS OPENS TODAY

More than 600 kids, ages 8 to 17 from across the eastern United States, have converged on Bristol Dragway for the 2009 NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League Eastern Conference Finals.  Competitors in eight age categories wheel half-scale dragsters, some capable of reaching speeds of 70 mph, in search of individual and team honors and a share of the purse worth nearly $100,000.

More than 600 kids, ages 8 to 17 from across the eastern United States, have converged on Bristol Dragway for the 2009 NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League Eastern Conference Finals.  Competitors in eight age categories wheel half-scale dragsters, some capable of reaching speeds of 70 mph, in search of individual and team honors and a share of the purse worth nearly $100,000.

Thursday, the first day of the three-day event, consisted of times trials for each competitor.  On Friday, each racer will get another time run before heading into the first round of eliminations.  Saturday will be all eliminations culminating in crowning the 2009 NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League Eastern Conference Finals champions in the 8- and 9-, 10-, 11-, 12-, 13-, 14-, 15- and 16- to 17- year-old groups as well as the team champions.  Each team may consist of up to 10 racers.

Over the course of the event, awards will be given for Best Appearing Track, Best Overall Car, Best Themed Car, Coolest Car and the coveted Team Spirit prize.  Racers in each age bracket will also contend for best reaction time and driving the closest to their dial-in number.

Gates at Bristol Dragway open at 8 a.m. each day. Participants in each category will get two time trial runs on Thursday starting at 8 a.m.  On Friday, they will all get one time trial pass starting at 8 a.m. to be followed by the first round of eliminations in each class. Eliminations in all age categories continue on Saturday at 8 a.m.
