The fourth annual Ultimate 64 Shootout presented by JEGS Mail Order came to a close Sunday May 31 at Edgewater Sports Park. The event, which hosts a marathon weekend full of big dollar competition was headlined by the Ultimate 64 Box Shootout, in which 64 elite competitors squared off for a $50,000 winners purse. The entry list read like a “Who’s who” of sportsman racing, featuring top competitors from across the nation. At day’s end, the big winner was a man who is no stranger to $50,000 paychecks, Tennessee based racer Jason Lynch.

Prior to the event Lynch was one of just four competitors who made claimed multiple $50,000 victories in his accomplished career (Peter Biondo, Scotty Richardson, and Gary Williams have each won a pair of $50,000 events as well); having won the main event in both the Big Bucks Bonanza at Farmington Dragway and the World Super Pro Challenge in Stanton, MI back in 2006. At day’s end, Lynch became the first and only competitor to score his third $50,0 00 triumph when he bested fellow professional drag racer Troy Williams, Jr. in the final round. Semi-finalists in the main event were Ken Sullivan and Jeff Hefler, while Gary May, Kenny Underwood, Luke Bogacki, and Mike Brumfield fell in the quarterfinal round.

While his main event conquest at the wheel of his Bullet Motorsports dragster was obviously the highlight of Lynch’s weekend, it was not his only score. In Friday’s American Race Cars 32-Car Box Shootout, Lynch took runner-up honors to Mike Bloomfield. Later that same day, Lynch drove Luke Bogacki’s ThisIsBracketRacing.com Vega to a $2500 victory in the evenings bonus Box race over 2008 Ultimate 64 $50,000 winner John Cook, Jr. The other Friday winners were Brian Newport, who claimed the $10,000 Box title over Derek Baum, and Benny Combs, who took the No Box win over Dan Stidham. In the bonus no box race, Chris Walters took the victory.

Saturday morning saw the featured No Box event of the weekend, with the $10,000-to-win K&N Ultimate 64 No Box Shootout. Chris Walters once again emerged from an elite field of bottom bulb racers to take home the prize after an all-Indiana final round with Joe Robertson. Another Indiana resident, Greg Dillman, fell in the semi-finals as did Kentucky’s Rodney Finchum. Rain washed out the rest of Saturday’s festivities, forcing an action packed finish to the weekend the following day.

After the Ultimate 64 Main Event was concluded and=2 0Jason Lynch was crowned as this season’s $50,000 champion, the remainder of Sunday’s action got underway. In the first $10,000-to-win Box event (which was held over from Saturday) John Labbous, Jr. continued what has been a phenomenal 2009 season for the Nashville, TN based competitor. The second generation competitor took the victory, defeating Will Crawford in the final round. In the early No Box event, Danny Black knocked off Brian Hendrickson for the victory.

Hendrickson would avenge his final round defeat later in the day, as he came back to win the final No Box class of the weekend, up-ending NHRA Stock eliminator standout Chris Stephenson in the final round. Will Sturgill put a wrap on the weekend by claiming the final $10,000 Box event crown, as he topped Paula Holman in the final stanza.
