For Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson, the timing couldn’t have been any better.

Johnson, of Greeneville, Tenn., recorded a new "unofficial" track record on Wednesday during pre-Mopar NHRA Mile High Nationals testing at Bandimere Speedway. The longtime Mopar runner pushed his Dodge Stratus to one of only two six second Pro Stock runs ever recorded at the facility located outside of Denver, Co.

Johnson posted a 6.996, while GM frontrunner Mike Edwards was a couple of ticks behind with a 6.998. Greg Anderson was third quickest with a 7.00.

“That felt really good,” Johnson said. “We’ve been out here testing for three days getting ready for the Mile High Nationals. There was a lot of heat and a lot of work, but when you pull something off like this … it makes it worthwhile.”

Johnson was the quickest of the Pro Stockers at Bandimere and because the cars were locked in so closely together during the test session, he believes it sends a message for the rest of the season.

“It’s going to be a knock-down drag-out for the championship,” said Johnson, CompetitionPlus.com’s predicted 2009 champion.

And for Johnson, timing is everything, especially headed into his sponsor’s event next weekend.

“This race is so important to us,” Johnson admitted. “There’s a reason why we’ve probably made more laps out here in the last five years than we have anywhere else. We’ve had some pretty good experiences out here.”
