DRIVERS JOCKEY FOR POSITION IN NHRA PRO MOD SHOOTOUT

pm_final.JPGWith six races completed and three remaining in the Get Screened America Pro Mod Challenge presented by ProCare Rx to qualify for the $35,000 Matco Tools Pro Mod Clash, the field is quickly defining itself.

Beginning at the NHRA Gatornationals in March, drivers have earned points for the "race-within-a-race" which pits the top Pro Mods against each other with the chance to race for a $25,000 top prize when the Clash is contested Oct. 29 - Nov. 1 at the NHRA Las Vegas Nationals.

The NHRA SuperNationals at Englishtown, N.J. last weekend saw only a slight change in the lineup with the qualified drivers jockeying for position. Raymond Commisso's victory launched him from a tie in eighth to a solid fourth, and Danny Rowe's runner-up performance moved him from fifth to third.

Still leading the class are nitrous-powered entries driven by Burton Auxier and Mike Castellana. Roger Burgess dropped into fifth, with Joe Baker, Tim Tindle and Jay Payne rounding out the top eight.

Just outside the field, Brad Personett delivered his best performance yet in Englishtown and setting records for the turbocharged contingent but was ousted first round, costing him valuable points.

With more than 300 points still available in the next three races, the fields can definitely take on a whole different complexion, and racers Mike Knowles with 237 points and Rick Stivers and Taylor Lastor, both with 200 points, are planning to make a resurgence to break into the show.

Teams have the summer off, with the next scheduled race Sept 2-7 at the MAC Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis.
