The BG Speed: A constant-duty Fuel Pump for Hot Rods and Trucks
(8-3-2006) - The BG Speed is a new constant-duty fuel pump from BG Fuel Systems designed for hot rods and trucks with power outputs of up to 650 HP. With two models available—Enduro (carburetors: PN 171005) and Sumo (fuel injection: PN17106), these compact, quiet, fuel-cooled pumps have a built-in heat sink to dissipate heat. They can be mounted horizontally or vertically and contain no shaft seals; therefore, are virtually leak-free.

The adjustable two-piece guideplate (patent pending) produces perfect pushrod/rocker arm alignment without cutting, welding, bending or tweaking.
The Chevrolet big-block's splayed intake and exhaust valves are tilted in two axes, a feature that requires a complex guideplate design. Conventional one-piece pushrod guideplates frequently compromise valvetrain geometry by causing misalignment between the rocker arms and valve stem tips, especially when using high-performance cylinder heads with non-stock valve angles, extra-long valve stems, roller rocker arms and custom pushrods.

“I know what most racers are thinking: there is nothing revolutionary about a carburetor spacer. And I know that several manufacturers claim to have a spacer that makes horsepower. The problem with most of the current designs is that they aren’t really applicable to the style of engine and the type of racing that sportsman drag racers are looking for,” explained APD’s John Kyle.
“When we started this project, I got a lot of input from several engine builders who we work with on a daily basis. In fact, Matt Driskell at Driskell Enterprises did nearly as much dyno work as we did--his input was instrumental in the design. These Black Widow spacers have a different configuration than any others on the market. In fact the taper on our 4500 spacers is actually completely opposite from the industry standard.”
The results have been impressive thus far. “It’s impossible to build a ‘one size fits all’ carburetor spacer. Different combinations have different characteristics, but this spacer increases air speed in the intake plenum. I’d say that between Matt’s testing and our own, we’ve seen an average of 10-12 horsepower gains with the Black Widow across the board (over engines with no spacer). Some engines see 20 horsepower, some only see 3 or 4, but I’d say 10-12 is about average.”

Dart Introduces New LS1-Style Cylinder Head
(3-21-2006) - Dart has developed a new aluminum cylinder head for GM LS-series small-block V8 engines that offers higher performance and more versatility than factory designs – and costs less than comparable OEM heads. The Dart LS1-style high-performance cylinder head has better airflow, more efficient combustion, and more user-friendly features than production LS1 castings.
The Dart LS1-style cylinder head retains stock valve angles, stock valve locations and stock accessory mounting holes to make installation easy. Virtually everything else has been improved. Two intake port sizes – 205cc and 225cc runner volume – cover applications from trucks and street machines to racing applications.
Dart's precision casting techniques and superior 355-T6 aerospace aluminum alloy produce as-cast ports that rival fully ported heads. The 205cc intake ports flow 296 cfm at .550-inch valve lift, and the 225cc runners flow 313 cfm.
