Kyle Busch Motorsports' Christopher Bell outlasted multiple late race cautions to grab the win at Gateway Motorsports park. The win is Bell's first career victory on pavement and all but clinches his spot in the Camping World Truck Series' inaugural Chase for the Championship.
While drivers near the rear of the field saw tempers flare and fists fly, 20-year old Bell kept his cool and drove away from second place finisher and pole-sitter Ben Rhodes on his way to KBM's 50th win as a race team -- the win ties KBM with Roush-Fenway Racing for most wins in series history.
“This one is for my guys here," Bell said. "My guys deserve this one. We’ve been so fast all year long and I just kept making a lot of mistakes, but I just can’t say thank you enough to all the guys at Toyota, TRD (Toyota Racing Development), JBL, everyone at KBM, all my pit-crew guys. They did an awesome job tonight and track position was everything. We got awesome motors underneath the hood of these things. All the guys at JGR, they never give up and keep digging.”
Pole-sitter Ben Rhodes grabbed a Truck series career best second-place finish in his first start at Gateway Motorsports Park. Rhodes seemed pleased with his finish because of the hectic nature of Saturday night's race.
“It was just a crazy, crazy race,” Rhodes said. “I was able to stay out of things, luckily. But it was crazy out there and I had a blast. (Christopher Bell) was awesome out there tonight, he came out racing for the win there at the end, that’s really what it’s all about. I can’t thank my guys enough. We’ve been close four times now and after getting that taste, it’s tough. But hopefully I’ll get my first win soon.”
The race featured eight lead changes amongst six different drivers and nine cautions which took up 44 of the race's laps. The last caution of the race showcased a fist fight between series regulars John Wes Townley and Spencer Gallagher.
Daniel Hemric finished in third place followed by Johnny Sauter in fourth place and defending series champion Erik Jones rounding out the top five. The truck series has an off-week before returning on July 7th at the newly reconfigured Kentucky Speedway.
