NATAAS, GASPARELLI PACE FIRST DAY NHRA SPORTSMAN FINALS

 

After one session, Julie Nataas (Top Alcohol Dragster), and Steve Gasparrelli (Top Alcohol Funny Car) lead NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing qualifying at the AAA NHRA Finals in Pomona, Ca.

In a day marred by a crash of TAD driver Fred Hannsen during the Q-1 session, Nataas jumped to the front with a 5.221, 274.83 ahead of Casey Grisel, who was just .006 behind with a 5.227. 274.83.

The class racing divisions all completed qualifying. In Competition Eliminator, Kurt Hugger drove his Chevrolet Pick-up, a Pro Stock Truck to the top spot, -.672 under the index with a 7.358. Josh Lee's H/Econo Altered '32 Bantam was second with an 8.839, -.651 under the index. Newly christened series champion Frank Aragona placed his J/Altered Automatic entry third with a 7.390, -.650 under.

For the second race in a row, Troy Huntzberry will head into Friday morning's first round as the top seed with a 9.759, -1.141 under the GT/KA index. Jeff Lane was second with his Super Stock/B Stock Cavalier with an 8.542, -1.108 performance. Jeff Dona's Super Stock/H Automatic Firebird was third.

In Stock, Chris Stephenson's D/Stock Automatic '68 Firebird was third with a 10.376, -1.174 under the index. Bob Gullett's F/Stock '68 Nova rowed through the gearbox for a 10.376, -1.049 under the index.
Larry Gilley's '69 Dart was third with a -.974 hit against the K/Stock Automatic index.

First-round eliminations in select sportsman categories will begin on Friday morning.
