FEEDBACK FRIDAY – FROM THE GRANDSTANDS: GIVE ME THE OLD SCHOOL

FEEDBACK ARTICLE: FROM THE GRANDSTANDS: GIVE ME THE OLD SCHOOL

I know and like many of the New School racers in the Super Classes of NHRA, but Old School is the way to go!

I applaud Tim and his views on Old School drag racing.

I would like to point out the index classes with alternate sanctions like PSCA.

PSCA index classes do not allow the throttle stops, stutter boxes,
timers, etc., that make for boring racing. The racing there is tight
and fun. The winners are truly Old School! - Dale Tuley

5-21-09timcharlet.jpgGive that man a big fat cigar!  If there were ever a more bullseye hit,
then I haven't seen it. God bless Dedenbear for being a great
entrepreneur, but his product did nothing for the sport of drag racing
... nothing.  Think back to when Formula 1 drivers actually drove the
cars, had to shift them manually and had to look at the tachometer!
God forbid they would have to do that now!  Ditto for the "Box"
racers.  Ditto for Jason Lamb, and ditto for Super Gas, Super Comp,
Quick Rod, etc., etc.  Boring isn't the right word....try sad.  My new
heroes..."No Box".  - Dave Gutierrez

don't gives up on your racing, maybe someday somebody will give you a
chance to drive again, you just have to believe in yourself and to know
that you are a past champion and that you are still a good driver. - Steven Coder

5_14_2009_carrier.jpgI just read the Larry Carrier story and came away with a different
perspective of the man. Now if only he was still around to possibly fix
the IHRA. I raced at Thunder Valley for the first time this year and
really enjoyed the facility knowing the past history. Thanks for the
great writing. – Harold Katz

4_24_2009_shirley.jpgShirley hits the nail squarely on the head. She was always willing to
take a minute to talk with me (and many others) while she signed a
diecast car and was as sincere as they get. I once told her that her
signature was something that a school teacher would be proud of because
it was very neat and clearly legible.

Thank you Shirley for the great memories. You will always occupy a special place in my heart. - Doug Jones

5_14_2009_carrier.jpgGreat
article!  It's really sad that the NHRA (post Wally) can't seem to
attract visionary leaders like Larry Carrier and Jim Tice.  Bean
counters will ruin the NHRA just like Roger Smith ruined General
Motors. - John Martin

4_24_2009_shirley.jpgI
always love to hear what Shirley has to say.  I'm glad that the
Internet is keeping her more active in racing than she would otherwise
be.  I remember seeing her at match races when I was a kid in the
1970's at places like Epping and I think she also went to Oxford,
Maine.  I have her book, which I found very entertaining.  I don't
agree with everything she has done in her life, but it's none of my
business.  The bottom line is -- she's great to listen to! - Earle Holt

FEEDBACK ARTICLE: NITRO SPEC TESTING: WHAT DOES THE NHRA HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH?

5_1_2009_nitro_test.jpgThey
do need to slow the cars down -- slightly. I believe that if you remove
one Mag—that means they have to remove some of the fuel and that will
slow the cars down cheaply and easily. A restrictor plate would do the
same thing that they did in Nascar. Cheap fix. One plate to fit all the
cars. The NHRA hands it out at the beginning of the weekend and
everyone gets a different one each race. They are actually all the same
but it takes chance out of the deal. Less air -- less fuel -- less
power. I guess you could make that plate for under 100 dollars each.
Wow what an idea, or just pull the plug on one mag. really cool. Two
mags on the engine but only one works. NHRA needs to address the cost
of the racing engine development. Reducing the above would change
development but the cost for parts would be less and the teams would
not have to junk all the parts they have. My opinion may just mean a
little bit. – Joe Rossman

FEEDBACK FRIDAY – FROM THE GRANDSTANDS: OF WHISKEY, ICE CREAM AND SOURED STOMACHS

FEEDBACK ARTICLE – FROM THE GRANDSTANDS: OF WHISKEY, ICE CREAM AND SOURED STOMACHS

4-3-09timcharlet.jpgI've
enjoyed every 'From the Grandstands' article that I've read and hope
more is yet to come from Tim.  I would like to see something on
"surviving a long day at the drags."

As an avid (read rabid) fan of drag racing and one that always plans
extensively for every event I attend, I can't help but be amazed at
some who seem to have had no planning at all.  As an example; you'll
see a guy dragging his girl through the pits and she's wearing spike
heels and will probably have at least a couple miles more walking to do
before the day is through. Add to that a broad range of temperature and
other weather particulars - well, you get my point.

I'd be willing to share some of my 'tricks' learned through the years. - Bill Fry
