DELAGO TO HELP TUNE CARRILLO’S TF ENTRY IN DENVER

World champion NHRA nitro Funny Car crew chief Tommy Delago will be returning to work this weekend at the Mile-High Nationals in Morrison, Colo., near Denver.

Delago, who was released as the co-crew chief of the Funny Car driven by Shawn Langdon for Kalitta Motorsports earlier this season, will help tune the Top Fuel dragster driven by Greg Carrillo at Bandimere Speedway.

“This should be cool,” Delago said. “I just got here to the track (Wednesday) and we will get to work to see what we can do.”

Delago said this deal with a Carrillo, which is a one-race deal, has been in the works for a while.

“I’ve known of Greg from his days of racing Sportsman and we first talked in the spring about me helping him,” said Delago, who guided Matt Hagan to a nitro Funny Car world championship. “Then, he called me two or three weeks ago and asked me if I was still available and said let’s do this. Let’s go burn some nitro and see what we can do.”

Carrillo’s 2018 season is highlighted by him getting a runner-up finish in Phoenix in February.

Delago said the last time he tuned a Top Fueler was in 2003 as an assistant crew chief to crew chief Mike Green. The dragster was owned by Darrell Gwynn and it ran the New York Yankees paint scheme.

“I don’t know that it will be a lot different going from tuning a Funny Car to a dragster,” Delago said. “I just have to get used to their equipment and see how it is acting and reacting. I’ve had some success at Bandimere in Funny Car and I have some data from over the years. We will just have to see what Greg wants to do.”
