Top Fuel points leader Steve Torrence, a Kilgore, Texas native, was uninjured and exited the vehicle under his own power after his dragster lost control after crossing the finish line during the second round of eliminations. Torrence won the round against Richie Crampton. Per NHRA rules, Torrence was able to bring out a back-up car to race in the semifinal round where he lost to Brittany Force.
