2016 NHRA FALLNATIONALS - DALLAS RESULTS

SUNDAY - BROWN, HAGAN, SKILLMAN AND KRAWIEC CLAIM VICTORIES AT THE AAA TEXAS NHRA FALLNATIONALS

Antron Brown furthered his points lead in Top Fuel on Sunday by racing to victory at the AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals.

Matt Hagan (Funny Car), Drew Skillman (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also winners in their respective categories at the 22nd event of 24 on the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule. The AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals is the fourth race of the six-race NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship playoffs.

Brown, the No. 1 qualifier, sprinted to a 3.744-second pass at 321.12 mph in his Matco Tools dragster to defeat Steve Torrence’s 3.750 at 323.12 in his Capco Contractors dragster. This is Brown’s 61st career win, seventh of the season and third at the Texas Motorplex. He extended his lead over second-place Doug Kalitta by 150 points with the win. Brown outlasted Chris Karamesines, Kalitta and J.R. Todd in the earlier rounds.

“We had a great drag race out there,” said two-time and reigning world champion Brown. “It could’ve went either way. We were both close on the tree, but we snuck one out there. Nobody is blowing people out anymore. The only way you win is by inches. To win that final was monumental for our team. We needed to do that. We’re still not done working yet.”

Torrence raced past Clay Millican, Phoenix winner Leah Pritchett and three-time 2016 winner Shawn Langdon en route to his seventh final round appearance of the season. The runner-up finish bumped Torrence up to fifth in points.

Hagan pushed his Pennzoil Dodge Charger R/T to a 3.913 at 327.03 to beat points-leader Ron Capps’ 3.906 at 322.19 in his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger R/T on a holeshot in the Funny Car final round. Hagan, who won at Dallas in 2010, claimed his fourth victory of the year and 22nd of his career. The Virginia cattle rancher moved to third in points, trailing Capps by 88 and second-place Tommy Johnson Jr. by 24. He defeated John Bojec, Houston winner Courtney Force and No. 1 qualifier Robert Hight in the earlier rounds.

“That was a huge round,” said Hagan, a two-time world champion. “It’s just unfortunate that we’re facing [Ron Capps] so late in rounds. In Reading I had him in the semi’s and he spanked me on the tree, and this time I was able to get a little payback. I actually try to minimize everything out of my control and just focus on leaving on time, keeping it in the groove, and turning on the win light, and let the rest take care of itself. We can’t worry about who might mess up or how many rounds someone might go; we just need to do the best job we can and turn on as many win lights as we can.”

Capps, who has five victories in 10 final rounds this year, outlasted two-time 2016 winner Tim Wilkerson, fourth-place Jack Beckman and reigning world champion Del Worsham in the earlier rounds. Capps became the 15th driver in NHRA history to appear in 100 final rounds.

In Pro Stock, Skillman notched a 6.661 at 209.36 in his Ray Skillman Auto Group Chevy Camaro to knock off Alex Laughlin’s 6.708 at 208.30 in his Gas Monkey Garage Chevy Camaro. Skillman, who won earlier this year in Brainerd, Minn., tallied his third career win with the performance. This was his first final round appearance and win at Dallas. The 2015 Rookie of the Year award winner moved to sixth in points. He eliminated Chris McGaha, points leader Jason Line and Shane Gray in the earlier rounds.

“We have struggled so badly with this race car,” said Skillman. “We were lost, and going into the Countdown that’s the worst time of the year to be lost. We had some luck on our side this weekend. I drove decent, and the car at least went. We’re going the right direction, I think. We need to test again. We’re going to get back out there. We’re going to hit these last two races hard, so that’s where we’re going to go.”

Laughlin, who claimed his first career victory recently in St. Louis, raced past five-time world champion Jeg Coughlin Jr., Shane Tucker and second-place Greg Anderson. Laughlin did not qualify for the Countdown to the Championship.

Krawiec rode his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson to a 6.880 at 196.36 in the Pro Stock Motorcycle final round to cross the finish line before Jerry Savoie, who posted a 6.856 at 196.76 on his White Alligator Racing Suzuki. Krawiec claimed his fifth win of the season, 36th of his career and second at the Texas Motorplex. Krawiec beat Karen Stoffer, Hector Arana and LE Tonglet to appear in his seventh final round of the season.

“Anytime you’ve got to race [Savoie], you’ve got to be focused,” said Krawiec, who now has a 17-point lead over teammate Andrew Hines. “As a matter of fact, you have to be focused for just about anybody out there. When you look at this category as a whole right now, it’s some of the best racing that there could be. You see LE (Tonglet) came up from nowhere and took Andrew out, then I’ve got to run him, and we run almost neck and neck with each other. You have to be on your game every single round here, no matter who you’re racing and who’s in that other lane.”

Savoie, an alligator farmer from Louisiana, beat Krawiec in the final round at Dallas one year ago. Savoie qualified No. 1 and sprinted past Joe DeSantis, Matt Smith and Englishtown, N.J., winner Angelle Sampey before losing to Krawiec.

The NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship continues at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Oct. 27-30, with the NHRA Toyota Nationals.

SATURDAY - BROWN, HIGHT, LINE AND SAVOIE RACE TO NO. 1 QUALIFIERS AT FALLNATIONALS

Antron Brown powered to the No. 1 qualifier in Top Fuel Saturday at the 31st annual AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals.

Robert Hight (Funny Car), Jason Line (Pro Stock) and Jerry Savoie (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the 22nd event of 24 on the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule. The AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals is the fourth race of the six-race NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship playoffs.

Brown’s Friday night performance of 3.682 seconds at 330.55 mph in his Matco Tools dragster was enough to secure the No. 1 spot. His time is a Texas Motorplex track record. The reigning world champion tallied his 47th career No. 1 qualifier, third of the season and first at Dallas. Brown will race Chris Karamesines in the first round of eliminations.

“We’ve been racing good in the Countdown but we haven’t been getting those qualifying points like we need to,” said Brown, the Top Fuel points leader. “A lot of these teams have been racking up on us. To come here and to qualify the way we have has been phenomenal. We just hope that can carry over to race day. That’s where all the points are at. Right now, I couldn’t be happier for my whole team.”

Leah Pritchett qualified second with a 3.698 at 327.43 in her Papa John’s dragster. Pritchett won earlier this season in Phoenix and is competing in the Countdown to the Championship for the first time. She is currently seventh in points and will find Scott Palmer in the opposite lane Sunday morning.

Tony Schumacher, an eight-time world champion, is third with a 3.705 at 326.71 in his U.S. Army dragster. He is paired with Kebin Kinsley. J.R. Todd is fourth and matched with Troy Buff while Brittany Force qualified fifth and Shawn Langdon qualified sixth.

Hight pushed his AAA Texas Chevy Camaro SS to the No. 1 qualifier in Funny Car with a 3.839 at a 332.02, which he notched Friday night. His time is the third-quickest Funny Car pass in NHRA history and a Texas Motorplex track record. This is his 49th career No. 1 qualifier, second of the season and fifth at Dallas. The 2009 world champion is currently eighth in points with one win this year, which came in Gainesville, Fla. He will go heads up with Brandon Welch in Sunday’s first round.

“Starting at St. Louis, we turned things around,” said Hight, a two-time Dallas winner. “Tell you what, to come out here to Texas, my sponsor’s race, and make four runs in the 3.80s, that shows we’ve got it going on. My teammates are running 3.80s and we’re right at the top. It’s exciting to have a qualifying like this, but tomorrow is a new day. We’ve been having problems with sealing the deal on Sunday. It’ll be a tough match tomorrow.”

Jack Beckman sits in the No. 2 spot with a 3.843 at a track record speed of 333.66 in his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T. Beckman, third in points, won earlier this season in Chicago and St. Louis. He will battle Dave Richards to start eliminations.

Tommy Johnson Jr. posted a 3.847 at 325.06 at the controls of his Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger R/T to qualify third. He will race John Hale in the first round. Two-time world champion Matt Hagan qualified fourth and Houston winner Courtney Force in fifth.

In Pro Stock, Line used his Saturday performance of 6.568 at 210.34 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro to secure the No. 1 spot for the seventh time this year and 48th time in his career. Line, a two-time world champion, won this event in 2011 as the No. 1 qualifier and also sprinted to victory here in 2013. He leads the points with eight victories and five runner-up finishes this season.

“Everybody is close,” said Line, who will race Alan Prusiensky Sunday morning. “It really comes down to just making the best decision. It’s like a big chess match. I think we had a good day using all three (Ken Black Racing) cars, and we used them wisely today. We learned some things and hopefully all three cars are good for tomorrow.”

Greg Anderson qualified No. 2 with a 6.579 at 210.11 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro. Anderson is a four-time world champion and also a four-time Dallas winner. He will go up against back-to-back and reigning world champion Erica Enders in the first round.

St. Louis winner Alex Laughlin, from Granbury, Texas, is third and matched up with five-time world champion Jeg Coughlin. Shane Gray is fourth and set to go up against Seattle winner Aaron Strong.

Louisiana alligator farmer Savoie claimed his first No. 1 qualifier of 2016 with a 6.805 at 197.31 on his White Alligator Racing Suzuki. This is the sixth No. 1 of his career and second consecutive at Texas Motorplex. Savoie, who won this event last year, raced to victory in St. Louis and posted three runner-up finishes earlier this season. He is currently fifth in points and will open eliminations against Joe DeSantis.

“At this point in the game it is really important to get as many points as you can,” said Savoie, who finished a career-high third in points one year ago. “I don’t know if I’m more excited about being No. 1 or to win a race. It’s a good weekend and Dallas is my home track now since we don’t run in Houston. After our showing last year, hopefully we can repeat it and have some fun.”

Reigning world champion Andrew Hines qualified second with a 6.811 at 195.90 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson. The five-time world champion won this event in 2014 and is paired up with Joey Gladstone.

Eddie Krawiec, Hines’ Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson teammate, is third and matched up with Karen Stoffer while Englishtown, N.J., winner Angelle Sampey is fourth and will go up against Shawn Gann.

Eliminations for the AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals are set to begin Sunday at 11 a.m. and will be shown live on FOX Sports 1 starting at 2 p.m.

FRIDAY - HIGHT, BROWN, LINE AND HINES LEAD QUALIFYING AT AAA TEXAS NHRA FALLNATIONALS

Robert Hight sprinted to the provisional No. 1 qualifier in Funny Car on Friday at the 31st annual AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals.

Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Jason Line (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also qualifying leaders in their respective categories at the 22nd event of 24 on the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule. The AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals is the fourth race of the six-race NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship playoffs.

Hight posted a 3.839-second pass at 332.02 mph in his AAA Texas Chevy Camaro SS to take the qualifying lead. His time is the third-quickest Funny Car pass in NHRA history and a Texas Motorplex track record.  Hight, a two-time Dallas winner, won earlier this year in Gainesville, Fla., and is eighth in points. He has 48 No. 1 qualifiers in his career and one so far this season, which came recently in St. Louis.

“That was pretty impressive,” said Hight, the 2009 Funny Car world champion. “Going up to that run, (crew chief) Mike Neff told me he thought we could run 3.84. To me, looking at that we’ve never run that and we go up there and run a little quicker at 3.83. That shows he has a great handle on it and I’m not going to question him. My team’s on the right track. All we can do is try to go out and win these last three races.”

Jack Beckman raced to a 3.843 at a track record speed of 333.66 in his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T to qualify second through Friday. Beckman claimed wins at Chicago and St. Louis earlier this year and currently sits third in the points standings.

Tommy Johnson Jr. powered his Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger R/T to a 3.847 at 325.06 to sit in the third spot. He is followed by three-time 2016 winner Matt Hagan in fourth and Houston winner Courtney Force in fifth.

In Top Fuel, Brown raced to a 3.682 at 330.55 in his Matco Tools dragster to lead the category through two sessions. His time is a Texas Motorplex track record. Brown, the reigning world champion, has 46 No. 1 qualifiers in his career and two this season. He has won six races in 10 final round appearances this year and has control of the points. He won this event in 2012.

“It was an incredible run,” said Brown. “That was a crucial point right there for us in this run for a championship. It got us some more quality points and it put us in the No. 1 spot so far. That car never stopped pulling. It was a little edgy in the beginning and then it was just hauling the mail.”

Leah Pritchett sits second with a 3.698 at 327.43 in her Papa John’s dragster. Pritchett, making her first appearance in the Countdown to the Championship, won earlier this season in Phoenix. She is seventh in points.

Sonoma winner J.R. Todd is third with a 3.723 at 309.27 in his SealMaster dragster. Brittany Force is fourth in her Monster Energy dragster while Shawn Langdon is fifth in his RedFuel / Sandvik Coromant dragster.

Line pushed his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro to the provisional No. 1 spot in Pro Stock with a 6.568 at 210.34. The two-time world champion has tallied eight victories and five runner-up finishes in 2016. He won this event in 2011 and 2013 and is two sessions away from securing his seventh No. 1 of the season and 48th of his career.

“I think we could’ve (gone faster), but maybe we weren’t willing to be aggressive enough to make that happen,” said Line, who leads the Pro Stock points standings. “We felt like we were reasonably safe with the first run and all-in-all it was a good day for us.”

Greg Anderson, Line’s teammate, raced his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro to the second spot with a 6.579 at 210.11. Anderson is a four-time Dallas winner and has notched seven wins and six runner-ups this season. He is second in points.

Alex Laughlin, who recently claimed the first win of his career at the event in St. Louis, is third with a 6.586 at 208.46 in his Gas Monkey Garage Chevy Camaro. He is followed by Bo Butner in fourth and Reading, Pa., winner Vincent Nobile in fifth.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Hines rode his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson to the top spot with a 6.812 at 195.42 in the first session. Hines, the defending world champion, has 38 No. 1 qualifiers in his career and two this season. He currently leads the points with five victories in eight final round appearances this season. He won the AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals in 2014.

“We were hoping to improve (in the second session),” said five-time world champion Hines. “What ultimately happened was it cooled off and the water grains came up with it and took the performance out of the motorcycle. That makes it harder to go through the air because it’s a little thicker and it makes the engine unhappy. Tomorrow I think we’ll have closer weather conditions to what we’ll see on Sunday.”

Hines’ teammate Eddie Krawiec powered to the No. 2 spot with a 6.821 at 195.42 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson. Krawiec, who won this event in 2013, is second in points with four wins and two runner-ups this season.

Jerry Savoie, an alligator farmer from Louisiana, is third with a 6.831 at 195.68 on his White Alligator Racing Suzuki. Angelle Sampey, who won in Englishtown, N.J., is fourth and NHRA Carolina Nationals winner Chip Ellis is in fifth.

The AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals will resume on Saturday with the final two qualifying sessions at 12:45 and 3:45 p.m. Eliminations are set to begin on Sunday at 11 a.m.
