CARNAGE REIGNS SUPREME IN FRIDAY PRO MOD

farber 02Pro Mod racers Pete Farber and Harold Martin damaged their race cars during Friday qualifying at the NHRA AAA Midwest Nationals outside of St. Louis.

Farber, of Baldwin, Mass., experienced severe tireshake which turned his 1969 Dodge Daytona sideways headed directly for the left lane retaining wall. He corrected enough to avoid a head-on collision but still made contact with the side of the car. He was checked on scene and released by NHRA emergency services officials.

"It got up on the tire pretty good, started smoking it and I guess I didn't catch it quick enough," said Farber. "It rotated around and I just didn't get the wheel cranked around enough. These cars are humbling machines. I learned the hard way."

Farber is done for the weekend but expects to be back for the NHRA Toyota Nationals in Las Vegas.

farber 03Martin, of Wixom, Mich., suffered an intake explosion which splintered the hood scoop on his Corvette, and sent chunks of carbon fiber into the air and into the grandstands. No one was struck by the shrapnel.

"There's something wrong electrically with the car," said Martin. "It's in the ignition, EFI or in ignition. We are trying to find out what went wrong."

Martin missed Friday's Q-2 session, and remains unclear whether he will run on Saturday.
