Courtney Force raced to her second consecutive Funny Car victory in the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship playoffs Sunday at the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals.

nfc winner2Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Dave Connolly (Pro Stock) and Jerry Savoie (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners at Gateway Motorsports Park near St. Louis in the third of six playoff races.

Force outran championship rival Matt Hagan in the final round to move to within 30 points of the series leader, her dad, 16-time world champ John Force.

She raced past her father in the semifinals and then used a performance of 4.094 seconds at 313.44 mph in her Traxxas Ford Mustang to hold off 2011 world champ Hagan’s Mopar Express Lane/Rocky Boots Dodge Charger, which trailed with a 4.121 at 309.77.

“It’s pretty awesome, for sure,” said Force who became the first woman in NHRA history to win back-to-back races in Funny Car.

“I’m proud of my guys for giving me a great race car,” she continued. “We got things turned around at the right time. Right here at the start of the Countdown to the Championship is when we need to have a consistent race car, and I think that’s what we’ve got so far. To have back-to-back wins and make a move in the Countdown is just huge for us. We need to create a gap between us and everyone behind us and climb our way up to catch dad if we want to win this championship. That’s what we have our eyes set on right now.”

Courtney also defeated Bob Tasca and Del Worsham in earlier rounds. It was her fourth victory of the season and seventh win of her career. It is the first time that a father and daughter have held the top two spots in the points standings.

“Everyone is so tough in this class that I’m definitely going to savor this moment with dad and I at Nos. 1 and 2,” Force said.

Hagan moved to third in the points order with his second Countdown final round appearance. He sits 42 points back of the leader.

In Top Fuel, Brown put his team back in the championship conversation by racing past defending world champ Shawn Langdon in the final round. Brown pulled away in his Matco Tools dragster with a 3.844 at 315.42, while Langdon’s Al-Anabi Racing dragster slowed near mid-track and finished in 4.035 at 279.38.

“This was a big day for us,” said Brown, who defeated Brittany Force, Terry McMillen and Steve Torrence to advance to the final. “We came into this race knowing our backs are against the wall. We’ve just been struggling at the last four races. We’ve been working hard, but no matter what we do, our car wasn’t cooperating with us. We got it back. It didn’t do exactly what we wanted it to do in the last two rounds, but it was close, and we were competitive to actually pull off this win today."

It was the third straight and fourth overall win at this event for Brown, who moved to fourth in the standings, 80 points back of series leader Tony Schumacher, who was upset by McMillen in the first round.

“St. Louis has always been a good turning point for us,” Brown said. “The more pressure that’s on us and the more our backs are against the wall, the more focused our team gets to do what we need to get the job done. It shows you how brutal this class is. All these Countdown boys are playing hard. We’re back in that fighting mode. With three races left, we have to keep pushing to do what we need to do.”

Langdon moved to second in the standings with the runner-up finish and now trails Schumacher by 57. Semifinalist Torrence is third in the standings 71 back of Schumacher.

Connolly took his second consecutive Pro Stock win in a photo finish over series points leader Jason Line. Connolly’s Charter Communications Chevy Camaro clocked a 6.562 at 211.53 to edge Line’s Summit Racing Equipment Camaro at the finish line, which posted a 6.565 at 211.66.

Connolly defeated Chris McGaha, V. Gaines and top qualifier Erica Enders-Stevens en route to the fourth win in a row for the Gray Motorsports Pro Stock team, which includes victories by his teammates Shane Gray and Jonathan Gray.

“The four wins in a row; that’s what’s most impressive to me,” Connolly said. “That tells you the depth of Gray Motorsports. I’m having a blast racing with them this year. We’re getting breaks and everything is going our way. This is a humbling sport; it can turn on you any time. We’re going to enjoy the wins as they come."

With the win, Connolly cut Line’s points lead to 26. He says that final round meeting was a huge one to win.

“It’s a two-for-one,” Connolly said. “If Jason would have won he’d be up by three rounds. Instead we cut it back to one. We’ve got to stop him from going rounds."

Louisiana Alligator farmer Savoie earned his first career Pro Stock Motorcycle victory by outrunning series points leader Andrew Hines in the final round. Savoie rode his Savoie’s Alligator Farm Suzuki to a winning performance of 6.871 at 196.53 while Hines’ Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson trailed with a 6.881 at 193.57.

It was the third final round appearance of the season for Savoie, who is not eligible for the Countdown. He defeated Craig Treble, John Hall and Hector Arana Jr. to advance to his fifth career final.

“We had a good bike all weekend,” Savoie said. “It’s all good. Drag racing is a family thing. It’s amazing that the whole Pro Stock Motorcycle pit was so happy for me. I always said if I ever won one of these I would retire. Well, I lied.”

With the runner-up finish Hines increased his series lead to 57 over second place Eddie Krawiec.

The NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship continues Oct. 2-5 with the NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway near Reading, Pa.

Knowles, who qualified 14th, outran former world champion Von Smith in the final round to earn the win. Knowles used a quicker reaction time in his supercharged Knowles Transportation ’68 Chevy Camaro and a final round performance of 5.934 seconds at 244.65 mph to take the victory over Smith, whose supercharged Dr. Moon/Al-Anabi Racing ’69 Camaro posted a quicker, but losing 5.929 at 241.80.

Knowles advanced to his second career final round appearance with round-wins over Steven Whiteley, Kevin Fiscus and Todd Tutterow.

SATURDAY - KALITTA, FORCE, ENDERS-STEVENS AND KRAWIEC EARN NO. 1 QUALIFYING POSITIONS AT ST. LOUIS

tf2

Veteran Top Fuel driver Doug Kalitta raced to his sixth No. 1 qualifying position of the season Saturday at the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park, near St. Louis.

John Force (Funny Car), Erica Enders-Stevens (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also will lead their categories into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations as No. 1 qualifiers at the third of six playoff races in the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship.

Kalitta powered his Mac Tools dragster to a performance of 3.758 seconds at 325.45 mph to take the top spot away from rookie Richie Crampton in the final qualifying session.

Kalitta, who led the series standings for most of the regular season, will try to reverse a recent trend of first round losses over the past three races when he opens eliminations against ageless drag racing legend Chris Karamesines.

“We kinda struggled in the first two Countdown races, but we know we can go rounds,” said Kalitta, a three-time winner at Gateway Motorsports Park, his last coming in 2004. “We’re real confident about that and now we need to go out there and prove it. We’re real excited for tomorrow. The car is running good, the track is holding up good, the lanes are both pretty even and the conditions are really good. I’m looking forward to it.”

Kalitta said from the cockpit his top qualifying effort was really smooth.

“It went down through there real nice and straight,” Kalitta said about the 42nd No. 1 of his career. “When they run real quick like that they are for some reason easier to drive. It was a great effort for the Mac Tools guys.”

Kalitta hopes to take advantage of his strong qualifying effort and convert it into a victory tomorrow so he can pull back into the Countdown to the Championship title conversation. He entered this race in third place in the points order, 107 back of series leader Tony Schumacher. He says given the category’s competitiveness, being the No. 1 qualifier is no guarantee for Sunday success.

“With this group in Top Fuel I don’t think you can relax regardless of who you are running against,” Kalitta said. “I run the Greek (Karamesines, in the first round) and you can’t take him lightly either. I’ve got beat by him too. We are planning on going to the final and getting a win tomorrow. We’ll see how that goes.”

Crampton’s Friday-best of 3.764 at 322.73 in his GEICO/Lucas Oil dragster leaves him in second in the final qualifying order, while series leader Schumacher, who won the first two Countdown playoff races, will start third in his U.S. Army dragster with a 3.768 at 326.16. Kalitta’s teammate, J.R. Todd, who qualified No. 1 at the first two Countdown races, will start fourth in his Optima Batteries/Advance Auto Parts dragster with a 3.779 at 325.37.

fc2In Funny Car, Force earned his sixth No. 1 of the season and 152nd of his career with his Friday run of 4.022 at 319.52 in his Castrol GTX High Mileage Ford Mustang. Force will race category newcomer Brian Stewart in the opening round.

“I am going to watch him,” said Force about his first head-to-head meeting with the former nostalgia Funny Car driver. “It’s no different than racing (Matt) Hagan. I used to be an unknown, and every now and then I would whip somebody like (Kenny) Bernstein or The Snake (Don Prudhomme). Maybe I was just lucky. But luck is what it’s all about.”

Force, 65, who is seeking a record 17th world championship title, is still trying to get back on track following an uncharacteristic red-light start in the delayed Pep Boys Carolina Nationals final round at Dallas. He followed that effort with a second round loss the next day to Tommy Johnson Jr. during eliminations for the AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals.

“I choked it last week and gave away 20 points,” Force said. “I got 16 back here during qualifying and I owe that to my team. We are really focused. You can look at history and see where people made mistakes, dropped the ball and fumbled it and you don’t want to live with that. Last week it was just driver error and I screwed up. I did that years ago and made that mistake. There’s four races to go starting tomorrow. I am going to keep my act together and see if I can pull it off.”

Cruz Pedregon will start second in his Snap-on Tools Toyota Camry with a 4.022 at 314.02, while Robert Hight moved to third in his Auto Club Ford Mustang with a 4.040 at 316.15. Dallas winner Courtney Force qualified fourth in her Traxxas Ford Mustang with a 4.047 at 317.87.

ps2Enders-Stevens will go for her third consecutive Pro Stock victory at this event from the top spot as she claimed her fourth No. 1 of the season and 10th of her career with 6.511 at 213.03 in her Elite Motorsports Chevy Camaro. She will face veteran driver Larry Morgan in the first round.

“We were trying to be consistent and have a nice race day setup for tomorrow,” Enders-Stevens said about her quickest pass of the weekend that came in her final attempt. “The conditions were definitely conducive to run that number. I am proud of my team for giving me a consistent race car and a fast one at that, so I am excited about tomorrow.”

She is hoping a three-peat at this event will move her back to the top of the points order. With her stellar qualifying effort where she was quickest in all four rounds she was able to trim away a bit of series leader Jason Line’s points advantage.

“We’ve had four really nice runs that we are proud of,” she said. “We’ve got a stout group of players out there and we’ve got our work cut out for us. Our side of the ladder is packed with all of the Gray Motorsports cars. I know I say this all the time, but we’re just going to focus on one round at a time. You can’t get ahead of yourself.”

Jeg Coughlin qualified second in his JEGS.com/Mopar Dodge Dart with a 6.522 at 212.53 and Line qualified third in his Summit Racing Equipment Camaro with a 6.522 at 212.39.

psm2In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Krawiec improved on his Friday time with a Saturday best of 6.810 at 194.60 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson to claim his ninth No. 1 of the season and 23rd of his career. He will race Shawn Gann in the opener.

“Every run you make down the track you learn,” said Krawiec, a two-time winner at this event. “Sometimes you go backwards and sometimes you go forwards. We got after it a little harder (today) and we sort of overpowered the track (in the final session). On our first run of the day, we killed it. We picked up a lot early and powered to a 6.810 so I know I have a great motorcycle. Now we have our threshold of what the track will take. We have our window. We know where we need to be and that should make for some great racing.”

Jerry Savoie qualified second with a 6.838 at 197.16 on his Savoie’s Alligator Farm Suzuki, Hector Arana Jr. will start third on his Lucas Oil Buell with a 6.851 at 197.68 and series points leader Andrew Hines is fourth on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson with a 6.863 at 195.22.

NHRA PRO MOD SERIES RACER COUGHLIN LOOKING TO SWEEP THE WEEKEND IN ST. LOUIS

pm

Troy Coughlin raced to victory in the delayed Pep Boys NHRA Carolina Nationals and also won his first round matchup from the No. 1 qualifying position in the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals on Saturday at Gateway Motorsports Park near St. Louis.

When Pro Mod eliminations resume on Sunday at approximately 2:30 p.m., Coughlin will be looking to earn his second Wally trophy of the weekend at the controls of his turbocharged JEGS.com Corvette.

In the delayed Charlotte final, Coughlin defeated Mike Janis, who is currently second in the series points standings. Coughlin was first off the line and powered to a winning performance of 5.937 seconds at 239.14 mph, while Janis’ supercharged late model Chevy Camaro had issues and slowed to a 9.438 at 112.11 finish. It was his second win of the season and sixth of his career and he moved to third overall in the points standings with the effort.

"Winning this trophy for the Charlotte race is pretty special." Coughlin said. "I'm pretty fired up, pretty excited."

Coughlin claimed the St. Louis No. 1 qualifying position, the first of the season and second of his career, with a performance of 5.845 at 250.41. He then outran Dave Pierce in the opening round with an effort of 5.851 at 250.18.

"We're not the fastest car out here," Coughlin said. "We're just trying to make good, competitive runs. (Crew chief) Steve (Petty), Mike, Kyle and those guys are doing a fantastic job on this thing. They're giving us a race car that's been repeatable. We're not the fastest hot rod through all these laps, but it's the most consistent, and I know when I pull up to stage that they've given me a good hot rod. This Corvette is pretty mean."

With a victory Sunday, Coughlin can continue to gain ground on series leader Rickie Smith, who lost in the first round of the Charlotte race but advanced to the second round in the St. Louis eliminations. Janis, who finished runner-up in the Charlotte eliminations, trails Smith by 35 points in second.

"We're getting closer, we're inching up on Rickie's heels," said Coughlin, who trails Smith by 59 points. "We're chewing on Rickie's heels, as they say. He has done an awesome job this year, but we want to chase him down and make him earn it. Mike Janis, Steve Matusek, there are a handful of guys who have the opportunity to jump up and win this thing. I’m happy as heck to be one of them."

Other first round winners of the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals eliminations included Von Smith, Dan Stevenson, Todd Tutterow, Don Walsh Mike Knowles and Kevin Fiscus. Sunday’s semifinal pairings in the category include Coughlin vs. V. Smith; R. Smith vs. Stevenson; Tutterow vs. Walsh; and Knowles vs. Fiscus.

FRIDAY QUALIFYING: FORCE, CRAMPTON, ENDERS-STEVENS AND KRAWIEC LEAD FRIDAY QUALIFYING AT ST. LOUIS

fc

John Force continued his march to a record 17th world championship title by racing to the Funny Car qualifying lead Friday at the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park near St. Louis.

Richie Crampton (Top Fuel), Erica Enders-Stevens (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders at the third of six playoff races in the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship.

Force powered his Castrol GTX High Mileage Ford Mustang to a performance of 4.022 seconds at 319.52 mph to take the top spot over longtime rival Cruz Pedregon, who qualified second in his Snap-on Tools Toyota Camry with an identical time of 4.022 at a slower speed of 314.02 mph.

“We always know we can run better at night when conditions cool down,” said Force, the Funny Car series points leader. “I’m amazed that no one ran quicker. Jimmy (Prock, crew chief) said we’ll run .06 or .07, but he always runs quicker than he thinks and it ran .02. So it’s exciting. It is my anniversary today and I told my wife Laurie that I was going to run low E.T. tonight for her, and that’s her anniversary present; that and some roses.”

Force ended a seven-race final round streak last weekend in Dallas and now must continue to work hard if he’s going to add another world championship trophy to his collection. Two family members – Robert Hight and Dallas winner Courtney Force – are making their own championship charges, along with Carolina Nationals winner Matt Hagan, Alexis DeJoria, Ron Capps and Tommy Johnson Jr., among others.

“We’re in the third race [of the playoffs] right now, and there are only three after this,” Force said. “This is when championships are won and lost. I’m going to get my head right, be focused, and race the way I taught my kids.”

Courtney Force qualified third with a 4.047 at 317.87 in her Traxxas Ford Mustang and was followed by Del Worsham in his DHL Toyota Camry with a 4.049 at 314.75. Johnson Jr. was fifth in his Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger, running 4.053 at 315.78.

tfTop Fuel rookie Crampton led his category with a 3.764 at 322.73 in his GEICO/Lucas Oil dragster. Crampton, who won the prestigious Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals to end the regular season entered the Countdown playoffs with some momentum, but that was dashed after a pair of first round losses at Charlotte and Dallas. He and his team showed with the effort today they are ready to get back on track in the final four playoff races.

“We got our old race car back that we seem to have lost after Indianapolis,” Crampton said. “It would be pretty cool for me to, hopefully, hold on to that and get my first No. 1 qualifying position. That would be huge. It’s one of the things I haven’t been able to do this year. I’m pretty excited about how it ran tonight.”

Crampton qualified sixth in the opening session, but crew chief Aaron Brooks picked up the pace in the evening session.

“The conditions were pretty good,” said Crampton, one of the leading contenders for the Auto Club Road to the Future Award that recognizes the top performing rookie of the year. “A 3.76 was pretty strong, but I’m a little surprised no one went quicker than that with such great cars running behind me. It was a great racetrack with great conditions, and it worked well for us.”

J.R. Todd, who qualified No. 1 at the first two Countdown playoff races, was first in the opening session but ended up second overall after he posted a 3.779 at 325.37 in his Optima Batteries/Advance Auto Parts dragster in the second session. Tony Schumacher, who won the first two Countdown races and moved into a commanding lead in the points standings, qualified third in his U.S. Army dragster with a performance of 3.780 at 326.16.

Doug Kalitta, who led the points for most of the regular season, was fourth in his Mac Tools dragster with a 3.780 at 324.83 and defending world champ Shawn Langdon qualified fifth in his Al-Anabi Racing dragster with a 3.780 at 322.11.

psEnders-Stevens, the two-time defending winner of this event, took the top spot in Pro Stock with a quick run of 6.513 at 212.90 in her Mach 1 Global Services / Elite Motorsports Chevy Camaro.

“I love racing in St. Louis,” Enders-Stevens said. “I have always liked coming here. I’ve even had some good semifinal finishes here in sportsman racing in some 100 car fields in Super Comp. I am not sure what it is (about this track) but there are just some tracks that are good to certain drivers. We are hoping for a three-peat this year. I am glad it is one of (my good tracks) and I am glad it is in the Countdown.”

After leading the points standings for much of the season she now trails series leader Jason Line by more than three rounds with four races remaining in the season and knows that now is the time to make a move.

“These qualifying points are going to be like thousandths of a second in Pro Stock racing on Sunday, so every little point matters,” said Enders-Stevens, who earned a category-leading six of the qualifying bonus points today for being quickest in both sessions. “Especially coming into this race we are only nine points behind third and 16 behind second. They all add up and we are going to take it one round at a time and see what we can do.”

Shane Gray qualified second in his Gray Manufacturing Chevy Camaro with a 6.528 at 212.06 and was followed by Series points leader Jason Line, who posted a 6.529 at 212.19 in his Summit Racing Equipment Camaro. Vincent Nobile was fourth in his Mountain View Tire Camaro with a 6.529 at 212.36.

psmIn Pro Stock Motorcycle, Krawiec was quickest on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson with a performance of 6.824 at 196.44.

If Krawiec’s performance holds through the final two qualifying sessions, it will be his category-leading ninth No. 1 of the season. Krawiec is in a tight battle for the championship with his teammate Andrew Hines, the current series points leader.

“We’re battling within our camp, but we’re also aware of what’s going on in the rest of the field,” Krawiec said. “Jerry [Savoie] has a quick Suzuki, and Hector [Arana Jr.] isn’t far behind. This deal is still wide open, but I’m pretty excited with the way our program is going. We have a great tune-up and have a great handle on my motorcycle. That’s what enables us to come to a track like this, unload from the truck, and make the best run of the day. Sometimes it’s an accident, but we also use all the data we have. That’s very valuable. We don’t pick our tune-up when we get here. We start working on that as soon as we leave the previous race.”

Jerry Savoie was second on his Savoie Alligator Farm Suzuki with a 6.852 at 196.19, followed by Dallas winner Hines, who posted a 6.863 at 194.63 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson, and Hector Arana Jr., who qualified fourth on his Lucas Oil Buell with a 6.865 at 196.07.

Qualifying continues Saturday with sessions at 1:15 and 3:45 p.m. Sunday’s eliminations are scheduled for 11 a.m.
