The problem is he doesn’t have the time to drive it as much as he wants. As a result, Head is putting the car up for sale.

“It’s a Firebird and it’s a body we got built by John Powers,” Head said. “It’s one of my dad’s (Jim’s) old chassis,” Chad said about his Nostalgia Funny Car. “Chuck and Del Worsham are originally the guys who put everything together and they did an awesome job, which is obvious because the car runs so good. We also have a Boninfante pedal clutch in it and Del Worsham’s fuel system and Del really put a great combination in that thing. We are selling it because we just don’t have time to run it.”

Jim Head is one of NHRA’s legendary innovators and he was a standout driver in both Top Fuel and Funny Car. He has been a fixture on the NHRA national circuit since 1980.

According to Chad, the Funny Car was completed in the fall of 2011 and would come with plenty of extras for a buyer.

“We have tons of spare parts,” Head said. “We have four or five sets of complete heads, some complete motors, clutch discs and spark plugs, and blowers. It’s too nice of a car and too nice of equipment just to sit around and maybe get to run it once a year. We are thinking about trying to take it out to the (California) Hot Rod Reunion (Oct. 17-19 in Bakersfield) to try and help sell it. I will drive it and Del head adwill tune it and we will have some fun and try and sell it. We hate to sell it, but we can’t just let that thing sit. We will give them (the buyer) the whole book and give them the tune-up book. I will do what I can do to try and help anybody who wants to buy it. I might take myself and a couple of guys and go run it for a weekend (with the buyer).”

Head only drove his Nostalgia Funny Car at six events, and he enjoyed every minute of the experience.

“We had a great time,” Head said. “Really that’s why I am racing my dad’s big (Funny Car) right now. If it would not have been for Del pushing me along and taking me to Bakersfield that day and helping me get my license, quite honestly I wouldn’t be driving dad’s big car. I have to give a lot of credit to Del and Chuck and the whole Nostalgia Series. Those guys are bad to the bone (racers). It’s just a matter of not having enough time (to run the Nostalgia Funny Car).”

Part of the reason Head is putting his Nostalgia Funny Car up for sale is he plans to run the full 24-race NHRA schedule in 2015.

“We’re heavily looking for sponsorship and we need to find some sponsorship, but my dad is pretty wound up about going to all 24 (races) in 2015,” Chad said. “I’m nervous, but I’m excited (about racing the full schedule). I still have a lot to learn at Head Inc. (his family’s construction business). That’s going to make it tougher to continue to learn, but I’m excited because I will get to go to places like Denver and Sonoma (Calif.) because I love those facilities. But, with us going to 24 races, there’s absolutely no time to run that (Nostalgia) car.”

Competing full-time on the NHRA national event circuit is something Chad Head has yet to do. In his rookie year in 2013, he competed in 17 races and he will run 19 races this season. Prior to becoming the driver for his father’s team, Chad worked as the director of racing operations for Al-Anabi Racing.

Chad Head skipped the Western Swing of races at Denver, Sonoma and Seattle before returning to action at Brainerd, Minn. He qualified No. 14 at Brainerd and lost in the first round to Matt Hagan. Chad will be competing at the U.S. Nationals Aug. 27-Sept. 1 in Indianapolis.

Anyone interested in possibly purchasing Head’s Nostalgia Funny Car may contact him by phone at (317)-506-0309 or by email at chad@headinc.com.

“I have a complete spreadsheet of everything we have,” Chad said.
