SUNDAY - TODD, TORRENCE, T. GRAY AND TONGLET VICTORIOUS AT NHRA SONOMA NATIONALS

J.R. Todd powered to his first career Funny Car victory Sunday at the 30th annual Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals at Sonoma Raceway.

Steve Torrence (Top Fuel) Tanner Gray (Pro Stock) and LE Tonglet (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also victorious in their respective categories at the 15th of 24 events on the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.

Todd clinched the victory with a 4.049-second pass at 323.27 mph in his DHL Toyota Camry against Tim Wilkerson who went up in smoke in his Levi, Ray & Shoup Ford Shelby Mustang during the final round.

The victory makes Todd the first African-American to win in the NHRA Funny Car category. He also becomes the second driver in NHRA history to win at Sonoma Raceway in both nitro categories, the first was Don Prudhomme.

“Our car showed us a lot of promise in Denver which gave us hope coming into here,” Todd stated. “We’ve been struggling so bad this season; I’m just happy to win a Funny Car. I was able to win here last year in Top Fuel and to be able to come back and do it again in Funny Car is pretty special.”

Todd powered past teammate, Alexis Dejoria, 16-time world champion John Force and Jack Beckman before entering the finals. Wilkerson took down Cruz Pedregon, No. 1 qualifier Robert Hight and Courtney Force en route to his second final round appearance this season.

Todd sits ninths in the standings, while Ron Capps stays in first despite his first-round exit. Matt Hagan and Beckman round out the top three, respectively, in the points standings.

Torrence piloted his Capco Contractor / Torrence Racing dragster past Antron Brown’s Matco Tools dragster in the finals with a pass of 3.784 at 329.42. He now has six victories on the season and 14 in his career.

“It’s basically been just a dream season,” Torrence said. “At the end of the day it’s just a testament to my guys. We will continue to do what we’re doing and we will do what we’ve done to get here.”

Points leader Torrence defeated Troy Coughlin Jr., Doug Kalitta, and Brittany Force before the final round. Brown piloted his dragster past Troy Buff, Scott Palmer and Terry McMillen before facing Torrence and knocking off teammate Leah Pritchett for the No. 2 spot in the points standings.

In Pro Stock, rookie Gray drove to victory with a 6.572 run at 210.05 in his Gray Motorsports Valvoline Chevrolet Camaro to defeat points leader Bo Butner in the final. This is his third victory of the season and fourth final round appearance.

“I’m proud of my guys,” Gray stated. “This is the best I’ve seen them run the car. We’ve got to go back and keep working, though. If I can go into the Countdown in the top three, then you have a legitimate chance of winning the Championship. That’s what my focus is now.”

Gray qualified in the fifth position and battled past Alan Prusiensky, defending world champion Jason Line and No. 1 qualifier Drew Skillman. Butner qualified second and took down two-time world champion Erica Enders, Chris McGaha and teammate Greg Anderson.

Gray remains third in the standings, while Butner stays in first following his runner-up showing.

Tonglet finished atop the Pro Stock Motorcycle field with a 6.783 pass at 197.02 on his Nitro Fish Racing Suzuki to narrowly defeat Matt Smith in the final round. After securing his first Mickey Thompson Tires Pro Bike Battle on Saturday, he notched his fifth national event victory of the season and 15th of his career.

Prior to entering the finals, Tonglet defeated Fred Camarena, Angie Smith and Hector Arana Jr. Matt Smith powered past Steve Johnson, Eddie Krawiec and defending world champion Jerry Savoie before facing Tonglet.

“It’s a big benefit to win the battle the day before which builds your confidence going into Sunday,” Tonglet said. “I could hear him (Smith) the whole way and knew it was close. I wanted to look over very badly, but I just stayed tucked in and just stared at the win light and it lit which was exciting.”

Tonglet remains the points leader, while Krawiec continues to hold on to the second position.

The 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season continues next weekend with the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways, August 4-6.

SATURDAY - TONGLET WINS NHRA PRO BIKE BATTLE; PRITCHETT, HIGHT, SKILLMAN AND M. SMITH CLINCH NO. 1 QUALIFYING POSITIONS AT TOYOTA NHRA SONOMA NATIONALS

LE Tonglet raced to his first career NHRA Mickey Thompson Tire Pro Bike Battle win during the Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals at Sonoma Raceway on Saturday. Tonglet received a $7,500 payday in the all-star bonus race featuring the top eight Pro Stock Motorcycles in the category.

In other racing, Leah Pritchett (Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny Car), Drew Skillman (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) earned No. 1 qualifying positions and will lead their classes into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event.

In his first appearance in the Pro Bike Battle, Tonglet, on his Nitro Fish Racing Suzuki, defeated Angelle Sampey and Andrew Hines before facing Eddie Krawiec in the finals. Tonglet’s pass of 6.827-seconds at 196.07 mph earned him the victory.

“This is the first time I’ve been in the battle,” Tonglet stated. “To be able to win it on the first go-around is pretty amazing. My brother (GT Tonglet) won it back in 2005 and to be able to follow in his footsteps just means a lot to me.”

In Top Fuel, no one was able to best the track record E.T. that Pritchett ran on Friday. She earned her fifth No. 1 qualifying position of the season and sixth of her career with a run of 3.669 at 304.80 in her Papa John's dragster. She’ll face Terry Haddock in the first round.

“This is the highest confidence we can have heading into a Sunday,” Pritchett said. “Keeping in mind that anything can happen on Sunday; no matter who you’re racing. Today we took this track extremely serious trying to get down it in similar conditions for tomorrow.”

Brittany Force piloted her Monster Energy dragster to the No. 2 spot after a pass of 3.689 at 330.63 and is paired against Steve Chrisman.

Hight’s national record speed of 339.87 with a time of 3.807 in his Auto Club of Southern California / California Highway Patrol Chevrolet Camaro from Friday earned him back-to-back No. 1 qualifying positions. This is his third of the season and 52nd of his career. He’ll line up against Tim Gibbons to open eliminations.

“Things are definitely going in the right direction for us,” Hight stated. “It’s a big deal. Everyone wants to talk about sweeping the swing. We’ve got one leg down and coming here to make the quickest run in history is pretty awesome.”

Hight's team owner and 16-time world champion, John Force, powered his PEAK Chevrolet Camaro to a pass of 3.848 at 337.16 to secure the No. 2 slot. He will face Jeff Diehl in the first round of eliminations.

Skillman, in his Ray Skillman Chevrolet Camaro, earned the top spot in Pro Stock with his run of 6.538 at 211.36 during the third qualifying session. This is his second No. 1 qualifying position of the season and fifth of his career.

“Momentum is the word of the weekend for us,” Skillman said. “Team is really positive, momentum is moving forward and engine is really strong. Our Chevrolet Camaro is really strong right now.”

Points leader Bo Butner drove his Jim Butner's Auto Chevrolet Camaro to a pass of 6.546 at 211.63 for second and will see two-time world champion Erica Enders in eliminations.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Smith powered his Polaris Victory Magnum to a pass of 6.771 at 198.70 during the final qualifying session. This is his second No. 1 qualifier of the season and 26th of his career. He will face Steve Johnson in the first round of eliminations.

“I feel good, very good heading into tomorrow,” Smith stated. “We struggled all weekend and blowing the tire way in. We were running big speeds, but just couldn’t get off the line. Ended up being a tire problem, but we’re excited for tomorrow.”

Hector Arana Jr. secured second after a 6.773 at 197.91 on his Lucas Oil Buell, while Tonglet sits at third with a 6.783 at 196.73 on his Nitro Fish Racing Suzuki.

FRIDAY - HIGHT, PRITCHETT, SKILLMAN AND TONGLET PROVISIONAL NO. 1 QUALIFIERS AT SONOMA

Robert Hight powered to the Funny Car qualifying lead Friday evening at the 30th annual Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals at Sonoma Raceway.

Leah Pritchett (Top Fuel), Drew Skillman (Pro Stock) and LE Tonglet (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also provisional qualifying leaders in their respective categories at the 15th of 24 events on the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.

Hight set the national speed record at a 339.87 mph with his 3.807-second pass in his Auto Club of Southern California / California Highway Patrol Chevy Camaro during the second qualifying session. He most recently won at Denver for his first victory this season.

“When you have Jimmy Prock as your crew chief, he tries to get everything he can out of that race track,” Hight said. “It’s the coolest noise when you hear that nitro engine running up that kind of RPM; it’s music to your ears.”

Jack Beckman is second in Funny Car qualifying with a 3.854 at 328.70 in his Infinite Hero Dodge Charger. Courtney Force rounded out the top three in preliminary qualifying, securing a 3.889 at 327.03 in her Advance Auto Parts Chevy Camaro.

Pritchett leads the Top Fuel category after she set the track elapsed time record of 3.669 at 304.80 in her Papa John's dragster. She is searching for her second consecutive No. 1 qualifier, fifth of the season and sixth of her career.

“It feels incredible,” Pritchett stated. “I’m just overly impressed with my team. I knew we were going after it in Q2. The thing about these Q2 sessions is that you have to hang it all out on the line, from a crew chief stand point to a driver stand point, because things are going to get funky out there; and they did.”

Brittany Force sits second after a 3.689 run at 330.63 in her Monster Energy dragster, while Doug Kalitta set the track speed record at 331.28 with a 3.694 run in his Mac Tools dragster to secure third.

In Pro Stock, Skillman currently holds the top spot after driving to a 6.544 run at 211.73 in his Ray Skillman Chevrolet Camaro during the second qualifying session. He is racing to secure back-to-back No. 1 qualifiers as well as a third consecutive victory.

“We are on a momentum of positive energy,” Skillman said. “We’ve got a great car and we’ve got great horsepower. Can’t complain right now; life is good. We’re going to keep swinging and hope to improve tomorrow.”

Greg Anderson is currently second with a 6.553 at 211.39 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro. Points leader, Bo Butner, is in the third spot with a 6.564 run at 211.66 in his Jim Butner's Auto Chevrolet Camaro.

Tonglet sits atop the Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying order after posting a time of 6.783 at 196.73 on his Nitro Fish Racing Suzuki during his second pass of the day. He is seeking his third No. 1 qualifier this season and sixth of his career.

“Being No. 1 builds up your confidence,” Tonglet stated. “We’ve won here two times and hopefully we can add to that. Also, hopefully we can get a couple of round winds at the Mickey Thompson Tire's Pro Bike Battle.”

Hector Arana Jr. is in the No. 2 slot after a 6.783 at 196.36 on his Lucas Oil Buell, while Jerry Savoie sits at third with a 6.788 at 197.05 on his White Alligator Racing Suzuki.

Qualifying at the 30th annual Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals continues at 1:10 p.m. and 4:20 p.m. at Sonoma Raceway.
