2015 NHRA GATORNATIONALS - EVENT RESULTS

SUNDAY - MASSEY, CAPPS, ANDERSON AND STOFFER RACE TO VICTORIES AT GATORNATIONALS

Spencer Massey claimed his first Top Fuel win of the season Sunday during the 46th annual AMALIE Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Auto-Plus Raceway at Gainesville.

Ron Capps (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Karen Stoffer (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners at the third of 24 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events in the season.

Massey piloted his Red Fuel dragster to a holeshot victory, winning with a performance of 3.882 seconds at 320.74 mph to defending world champ Tony Schumacher’s quicker but losing 3.873 at 313.29 in the U.S. Army dragster. It was Massey’s first win at Gainesville and 18th of his career. The victory moves Massey into a tie with Shirley Muldowney and Darrell Gwynn for 12th on the all-time wins list in Top Fuel.

"Tony has been running really strong," said Massey, who moved to third in points with the win. "I know that he can step his game up and be deadly when he needs to on the starting line. We’ve got four new members on the team and three of four haven’t won a race. Now they’ve won the Gators.”

It was Schumacher’s second consecutive final round appearance of 2015, as he earned a victory at Phoenix in late February. With the runner-up finish he moved to third in points.

In Funny Car, Capps drove his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger R/T to a performance of 4.115 at 311.05 to take the victory over first-time finalist John Hale. The win was Capps’ first of the season, third at this event and 44th of his career (43rd in Funny Car). The win tied him for second all-time on the Funny Car wins list. Following the victory, Capps moves to second in points behind Don Schumacher Racing teammate Matt Hagan.

“When you’ve got a race car like today, you almost wait for something to go wrong,” said Capps, who last won in Brainerd last season. “I’ve driven for almost 18 years and I feel like I find myself driving the car as if I am driving something that’s just so far behind the other cars. I think that really helped me this weekend.”

Rookie driver Hale was appearing in his first career Funny Car final in only his sixth career start. Driving the ALO Drink Dodge Charger for Jim Dunn Racing, Hale defeated 16-time world champ John Force, Alexis DeJoria and Blake Alexander to reach the finals. It was JDR’s first final round appearance since Seattle 2008.

Anderson claimed his milestone 75th career victory and first in Pro Stock since Englishtown in 2012, when he clocked a 6.538 at 213.43 to defeat teammate Jason Line in an all-Summit Racing Chevy Camaro final round. Anderson’s third Gatornationals win moves him to sixth in the points standings.

“It’s a special day and weekend,” said Anderson, a four-time Pro Stock world champ who had off-season heart surgery prior to the start of the 2014 season. “It was my birthday yesterday so it’s pretty darn cool. A year ago I couldn’t even come to this race [due to the surgery]. It was a great day for Greg Anderson, KB Racing and everyone involved with us.”

Line continued an impressive start to the 2015 season with his runner-up finish. He won the season-opening event at Pomona and this final round result was his 40th career runner-up finish. Line, a two-time world champ, sits second in points.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Stoffer defeated three-time world champ Eddie Krawiec in the final with a 6.900 at 195.11 on her Suzuki Extended Protection Suzuki to claim her second victory at this event. Appearing in her first race since Indianapolis in 2013, Stoffer defeated Steve Johnson, Angie Smith, and Shawn Gann en route to the final. The win was Stoffer’s first since Denver in 2011 and her seventh overall.

“We had a lot of heart and a lot of passion,” Stoffer said. “We don’t have a big budget but we certainly have a big heart. We certainly tried to get some high performance out of it and we were able to do it. The boys worked hard, worked till about midnight each night and gave us a good bike on Sunday.”

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series heads to Charlotte, N.C. for the sixth annual NHRA Four-Wide Nationals, March 27-29, at zMAX Dragway.

SATURDAY - C. PEDREGON, LANGDON, MCGAHA AND M. SMITH TAKE TOP QUALIFYING SPOTS

For the fourth year in a row and the sixth time overall Cruz Pedregon earned the No. 1 seed in Funny Car at the AMALIE Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals.

Shawn Langdon (Top Fuel), Chris McGaha (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also will lead their categories into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations as No. 1 qualifiers at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event at historic Auto-Plus Raceway at Gainesville.

Pedregon powered to a track record 4.022-second run at 312.13 mph in his Snap-on Tools Toyota Camry to earn his 58th career No. 1 qualifying position. The 1998 Gainesville winner is seeking his first victory since Englishtown last season and faces Dave Richards in the first round.

"Conditions were very similar to when we ran Friday,” said Pedregon, a two-time world champ. "We were trying to be steady today and not really try to improve the time. We figured if it was there, it was there."

Del Worsham qualified second in the DHL Toyota Camry with a 4.057 at 312.57 and faces Blake Alexander in round one. Worsham won this event in 2011 in Top Fuel, but is looking for his first in Funny Car.

John Force enters race day as the No. 3 qualifier with a 4.068 at 315.19 in his PEAK Antifreeze Chevy Camaro SS and faces John Hale. Tim Wilkerson qualified fourth while 2012 world champ Jack Beckman rounds out the top five qualifiers.

In Top Fuel, Langdon claimed his second straight No. 1 qualifier at this event with a run at 3.765 at 325.45 in his Knuckle Sandwich/AJPE dragster. Langdon, the 2013 Top Fuel world champion, has had a successful start to 2015, winning the season-opening event in Pomona from the No. 1 starting spot and reaching the semifinals at Phoenix. It is Langdon’s second straight top qualifier at Gainesville and 18th of his career. He will open eliminations against Morgan Lucas.

“We wanted to come out and make a strong run in that early session,” said Langdon, who is seeking his first career Gatornationals win. “We knew it was going to heat up for the later session today. We really felt that was the run to go after. Luckily it held and it was basically what we were trying to run.”

Spencer Massey sits second following a 3.793 at a track record speed of 329.02 in the Red Fuel dragster. Massey, a three-time winner last season, faces Chris Karamesines.

Defending event winner Doug Kalitta was third in his Mac Tools dragster with a 3.796 at 323.58 and goes up against teammate J.R. Todd in round one. Defending world champ Tony Schumacher enters race day in fourth while Leah Pritchett starts fifth.

During Saturday’s first session, Larry Dixon walked away from a harrowing crash after his C&J Energy Services dragster went out of control near the finish line. Dixon, a three-time world champ, was uninjured in the accident but will not race in eliminations on Sunday.

In Pro Stock, McGaha held on to his Friday run of 6.507 at 213.73 to claim the top spot in his Harlow Sammons Chevy Camaro. It is McGaha’s first career No. 1 qualifier at Gainesville and third of his career. McGaha is seeking his first career victory in eliminations tomorrow.

“The Number one position is good,” McGaha said. “Those little points do get addicting after awhile. You can make up a round here or there. I’ve still got to win a race, I can’t lose focus here. It’s one round at a time.”

Jason Line raced his Summit Racing Chevy Camaro to the No. 2 qualifying position with a 6.522 at 212.69. Line, a two-time world champ, has four wins at this event and opens eliminations against John Alan Prusiensky as he seeks a fifth.

Points leader and Phoenix winner Rodger Brogdon qualified third in his RoofTec Chevy Camaro with a 6.526 at 212.93 and will face V Gaines. Shane Gray qualified in the fourth position while Greg Anderson finished qualifying in fifth.

Smith, a two-time world champ, earned the top spot in Pro Stock Motorcycle on his final qualifying attempt with an effort of 6.793 at 197.74 on his Victory Gunner, which he debuted for the first time this weekend. The run gives Smith his third No. 1 qualifying spot at Gainesville and 23rd of his career. He races wife Angie Smith in the first round. They last faced off in the final of Epping, N.H. last season when Angie beat him to claim her first career victory.

“I can’t say enough about Victory and debuting the Gunner bike,” said Smith. “For Polaris, it’s an awesome deal for them to step in with NHRA drag racing and to come out and show what we’ve done right off the bat.”

Three-time world champ Angelle Sampey entered Saturday’s final sessions as the No. 1 seed but will settle for second with a 6.872 at 194.74. Sampey, who is returning from an ankle injury sustained at Las Vegas in October last season, will race her Star Racing Buell against former teammate Chaz Kennedy in the first round.

Eddie Krawiec qualified third on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson with a 6.873 at 195.48, setting up a race with Mike Berry. Defending world champ Andrew Hines sits fourth after qualifying and Jim Underdahl is fifth.

FRIDAY -  SCHUMACHER, C. PEDREGON, MCGAHA AND SAMPEY LEAD DAY ONE QUALIFYING

Defending world champ Tony Schumacher raced to the qualifying lead in Top Fuel Friday at the AMALIE Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals.

Cruz Pedregon (Funny Car), Chris McGaha (Pro Stock) and Angelle Sampey (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were the leaders in their respective categories at the third of 24 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events.

Schumacher had a great start to the weekend at Auto-Plus Raceway at Gainesville, leading both qualifying sessions and piloting his U.S. Army dragster to a performance of 3.796 seconds at 323.43 mph during the second session.

"We’ve got a great car,” said Schumacher, who is looking for his 77th career top qualifying start and third at Gainesville. “We’re not coming off a bad race either. We won in Phoenix and performed decent in Pomona. I think the changes we made early on, for once, really worked. It’s setting a good trend on a tune-up that we needed to find quicker than last year.”

Brittany Force had an impressive run during the second session in her John Force Racing dragster, running a 3.817 at 318.09, good enough for the current No. 2 spot. Spencer Massey sits third after the first two sessions with a 3.841 at 323.66 in the Red Fuel dragster.

In Funny Car, Pedregon was quickest with a 4.022 at 312.13 in the Snap-on Tools Toyota Camry. A two-time world champ, Pedregon is going for his fourth consecutive top qualifying spot at Auto-Plus Raceway at Gainesville.

“I wish I could tell you because I would do it at all the tracks,” said Pedregon about his qualifying luck in Florida. “It just works out that way. There’s been a few changes to the car mechanically even since last year. The four years in a row that we have managed to stay No. 1, all four of those were done with slightly different setups on the car.”

Del Worsham continued his positive early season momentum with a 4.057 at 312.57, good enough for the provisional No. 2 spot John Force, the winningest Funny Car driver in Auto-Plus Raceway at Gainesville history with seven career wins, sits third with a 4.075 at 314.02. Defending world champ Matt Hagan drove his Mopar Express Lane Dodge R/T to the current No. 8 position.

McGaha led the Pro Stock category after two sessions with a run of 6.507 at 212.73 in the Harlow-Sammons Chevy Camaro. McGaha, who set career-bests for both time and speed at Gainesville, is going for his third No. 1 qualifying effort of his career.

“We’re finding our way back,” said McGaha about last season’s struggles. “We had issues in the engine department and slowly overcame those. We started finding it towards the end of the year. This winter, we really found the mojo.”

Phoenix winner Rodger Brogdon continued his strong performance in his RoofTec Chevy Camaro, claiming the current No. 2 position with a 6.525 at 212.93. Shane Gray was third with a 6.526 at 212.26 in the Gray Manufacturing Camaro. Defending world champ Erica Enders-Stevens sits in the seventh position in her Elite Motorsports Camaro with two sessions remaining.

Three-time Pro Stock Motorcycle world champ Angelle Sampey set the pace in the two-wheel class with a run of 6.891 at 192.44 on the Star Racing Buell. Sampey, who had offseason surgery to repair an ankle injury from Las Vegas last October, will be going for a fourth No. 1 qualifier at Gainesville and 46th overall.

“Over the offseason, I think the ankle injury actually was a blessing in disguise,” said Sampey, who rejoined the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series tour in St. Louis last September after a six year absence. “It really made me work hard over the offseason to improve mentally and physically.”

Karen Stoffer, who last raced at Indianapolis in 2013, qualified No. 2 on Friday with a 6.904 at 193.18 on her Stoffer Enterprises Suzuki. Defending world champ Andrew Hines drove his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson to a 6.905, 192.91 putting him in the third provisional position.

Qualifying continues for the AMALIE Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Noon and 3 p.m. Sunday’s eliminations start at 11 a.m.
