SATURDAY FINAL RESULTS - FIRST-TIMERS FILL ADRL WINNER'S CIRCLE IN OHIO

px.JPG
Cody Barklage (far lane) took a .035 advantage off the start of the Pro Extreme final of the National Guard ADRL Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags III at National Trail Raceway, but ended up not needing it as opponent Joshua Hernandez got out of shape about half-track and was disqualified for taking out the 330-foot marker.
In a remarkable turn of events, all professional class winners at the Aug. 21-22, ADRL Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags III had never before visited a National Guard American Drag Racing League (ADRL) victory lane. Even more remarkable, four of the five were up against their class wins leader in the final round at National Trail Raceway, near Columbus, Ohio, with the fifth also facing a former race victor.

Young Cody Barklage defeated Joshua Hernandez, the Pro Extreme wins leader at six, while Thomas “Tom Slick” Myers took down Shannon “Iceman” Jenkins, who leads the Pro Nitrous division with seven prior event titles. In Flowmaster Extreme 10.5, Spiro Pappas broke through over eight-time race winner and defending series champion Billy Glidden; Paul Gast got past Scott Gray, who leads all Pro Extreme Motorcycle riders with three victories; and Dean Goforth downed Doug Kirk, winner of the season opener at Houston this year in the National Guard ADRL’s new Extreme Pro Stock class.

“That was awesome,” the Lake Ozark, Missouri-based Barklage declared after pedaling his supercharged Lucas Oil 1967 Firebird to a 3.91-seconds win over the eighth mile at 190.48 miles per hour. “I can’t really put into words how I’m feeling right now because our team really needed this. I’m sure it’ll hit us by tomorrow, but it just seems so unreal right now.”

After laying down a string of solid mid- to high-3.70 passes to reach the final, Hernandez had been heavily favored, but his National Guard-backed ’57 Chevy drifted left toward the center line, taking out the halfway marker on the track before the veteran got it reined back under control.

“That surprised me; it really did,” Hernandez said. “The car had been working great all day, going very straight and easy to drive. But we’re running these things right on the ragged edge every time. We’re balancing like a ballet out there and today I guess we just stubbed our toe.”

pro_nitrous.JPG
Thomas Myers (far lane) scored a very popular victory in the Pro Nitrous final. Even opponent Shannon Jenkins said he was happy to see Myers and his wife, Rebecca, pick up their first Minute Man trophy. “They’re good people,” the “Iceman” said.
Myers, an auto mechanic from Granbury, Texas, won from the 16th and final qualifying position. He went 4.02 seconds at 183.89 mph with his ’63 split-window Safety-Kleen Corvette in the final, while Jenkins suffered traction problems early in his run and slowed to a 4.28 at 156.03 mph. Jenkins later admitted he simply misread changing track conditions and his ’68 Camaro started shaking its tires before reaching half-track, allowing Myers to overcome a holeshot and pass him by.

An emotional Myers dedicated the race win to his grandfather, who passed away just a few days before the event. He and his wife, Rebecca, have been racing with the National Guard ADRL since its inception five years ago.

“I can’t believe we finally made it, especially against the level of teams we’re racing against out here,” Myers said after defeating Pat Stoken, Stan Allen and Burton Auxier in the preliminary rounds, each a member of a multi-car team, as is Jenkins. “But the ADRL has put together a great series where the little guy can shine. It’s an honor for me just to line up against someone like Shannon Jenkins, but to actually beat him in a final? Wow, I can’t even say what that means to me.”

Spiro Pappas, the newest member of the Mickey Thompson 3-Second Club for Flowmaster Extreme 10.5 drivers that dip into the threes, picked up his first National Guard ADRL win when Billy Glidden went red against him.
A red-light start by Glidden handed the Flowmaster Extreme 10.5 win to Pappas, who posted an off-the-pace 4.18 pass at 148.31 mph in the final due to the turbocharger on his 2009 Pontiac GXP malfunctioning. In the semi-finals against Chuck Ulsch, however, he went 3.99 seconds at 190.11 to advance while joining Ulsch as the second member of the exclusive Mickey Thompson 3-Second Club for Flowmaster Extreme 10.5 drivers.

“That was a big deal for us, to get that three-second run over with. I wish we could’ve been first, but it still feels good to know we did it,” the popular Chicago racer said. “I also wish we could’ve had a good race in the final, but it doesn’t make the win over Billy any less enjoyable. This is what we came here for.”

Glidden later explained he suffered a clutch controller failure on the line, causing him to go red.

“After the burnouts I looked over and could see he was smoking pretty bad out the left side of his car, so I knew he was hurt. So I wasn’t pushing the tree or anything. I was just going to do my regular deal when this happened,” Glidden said, referring to the faulty controller. “It makes me sick, if you want to know the truth.”

pro_stock.JPGDoug Kirk (near lane) left just four thousandths too soon in the Extreme Pro Stock final handing Dean Goforth his first National Guard ADRL event win.
Gast, from Grand Island, NY, also was the beneficiary of a red-light start, as Gray left three-thousandths too soon, tossing away a 4.30 pass against Gast’s 4.31 at 160.69 mph.

“The bike ran really well all day, although it slowed down a little and made its worst run of eliminations there in the final,” the 60-year-old said in victory lane. “I knew I had a good light (.016, his best of the day), but I didn’t know he’d (Gray) gone red, so I wasn’t sure I’d won until it was over.”

After setting low E.T. of the meet for the Extreme Pro Stock class with a 4.10 in the semis that sent him to his second-straight final-round appearance, Goforth ran 4.13 at 173.25 with his ’09 GXP against a redlighting Kirk, who left four-thousandths-of-a-second ahead of the go signal.

“I had no idea he’d gone red until we were well on down there when I saw the win light in my lane,” said Goforth, who opened the day with a win over his son, Cary, then beat Pete Berner and points leader Brian Gahm to reach the final. “Every round is so tough out here. This is the best racing there is; I’m having a lot of fun doing this.”

The National Guard ADRL’s Pro Jr. Dragster class for kids 8-17 years old also crowned a first-time race champion in Minford, Ohio’s R.J. Thacker, who beat Caleb Ellison in the final round.

With just one race left to gain points toward qualifying for the 2009 championship-deciding Speedtech Battle for the Belts this October at Ennis, Texas, all National Guard ADRL teams will be turning their attention to the series oldest and most prestigious event, Flowmaster Dragstock VI, to be held Sept. 11-12, at Rockingham Dragway in North Carolina.

Saturday's final results from the ADRL Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags III at National Trail Raceway. The race is the Eighth of 10 in the National Guard American Drag Racing League:

FRIDAY QUALIFYING - TOP QUALIFIERS MAKE MARK ON NATIONAL TRAIL RACEWAY

taylor.jpg
Frankie “Mad Man” Taylor captured the provisional pole in Pro Extreme qualifying Friday night. He faces one more round of qualifying on Saturday before eliminations begin to determine event winners in five professional classes.
The performances of the provisional number-one qualifiers for the National Guard ADRL Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags III in Hebron, Ohio, put to rest any concerns that some racers expressed over track conditions at National Trail Raceway.

Frankie Taylor of Dickinson, Texas, blistered the National Trail eighth mile in 3.74 seconds at 202.52 miles per hour with his supercharged 2005 Corvette to lead 26 teams in the Pro Extreme class, while Eureka, Montana’s Pat Stoken ran a career-best 3.90 at 191.16 mph with his ’68 Camaro to finish on top of 28 Pro Nitrous entries after three rounds of qualifying on Friday.

In Flowmaster Extreme 10.5 action, Maryland racer Chuck Ulsch continued his recent domination of the class with a very strong 4.03 at 195.53 mph in a supercharged ’68 Camaro, while points leader and Ohio native Brian Gahm drove his ’07 Mustang to the provisional pole in Extreme Pro Stock with a solid 4.14 blast at 173.92 mph. Up on two wheels, Macon, Georgia’s Lance Hines leads 22 Pro Extreme Motorcycle riders with a solid 4.22-seconds pass at 169.30 mph aboard his 2009 Suzuki.

Taylor was first after the opening qualifying session and the only driver in the first round to exceed 200 mph, but 2006 Pro Extreme World Champion Bubba Stanton stepped up with a 3.77 at 198.41 in his ’63 Corvette on Friday afternoon to steal away the provisional top spot.

Pat Stoken credited Pro Nitrous teammate Jim Halsey and his crew for helping Stoken make his career-best pass in qualifying number one at National Trail Raceway.

“Conditions improved quite a bit tonight and that helped us,” Taylor said after responding with the second-best run of his career. “Now with us solidly in the field we can experiment some more tomorrow. But I’m not even sure we’ll run that session. We’ll probably wait and see what everyone else is doing before we make that decision.”

Following Taylor on the list are Stanton, Jason Hamstra, Alex Hossler and Cody Barklage, with Tommy D’Aprile currently on the bump spot in 16th with a 4.00 pass at an early shut-off 147.18 mph in the debut of a new 1970.5 Camaro for team owner Mel Bush.

Stoken was not in the 16-car field when the third and final qualifying session of the day began, but his best-ever elapsed time and speed quickly resolved the problem. It also helped keep his 2009 championship hopes alive as he fights to hold on to the eighth and last qualifying position for the season-ending Speedtech Battle for the Belts.

“That was a big run for us. I’m not so sure it’s going to hold up as number one, but it certainly takes a lot of the pressure off,” Stoken said. “At least now we know we’ll be racing for sure tomorrow and we can fool around with it a little in the final (qualifying) session.”

Stoken currently leads Shannon Jenkins, teammate Jim Halsey and Jenkins’ teammate Burton Auxier, who also is his closest rival for the transfer spot to the Belts playoff. The 16th-place qualifying slot presently belongs to the 4.10 at 177.77 mph by Terry Murphy.
ulsch.jpg
In just the third race outing for his new Vanishing Point-built Camaro, Chuck Ulsch, who just two weeks earlier became the first Flowmaster Extreme 10.5 driver to dip into the threes, seized the provisional number-one starter position with a 4.03 in Friday-night qualifying.

After battling traction issues in his first two qualifying attempts, Ulsch was on a pretty pass in Friday night’s session when his car again shook its rear tires about 200 feet out. He didn’t lift, however, and drove straight through to the finish line. Team owner Gil Mobley stressed the traction issues stemmed from a problem with the Camaro’s set-up; not any problem with the National Trail racing surface.

“I think the track is good; I think we just missed it; we didn’t have enough power through the middle part of the track,” he explained. “So we’ll add a little more power through there tomorrow and hopefully that’ll take care of it. If not, we can always go back to where we were.”

Gary White and defending class champ Billy Glidden are second and third, respectively, followed by Jeff Paulk and Spiro Pappas, while Bill Lutz currently rounds out the 16-car field after posting a 4.66 lap at 139.46 mph.

Gahm is the only one of the current top qualifiers to have laid down his class-leading pass in today’s opening session. It was fortunate for him, too, as Gahm experienced mechanical catastrophes in both subsequent attempts, with the pinion gear in his car’s rear end breaking in the second round, then an intake valve spring broke along with his transmission in the third round.

Ohio’s own Brian Gahm is the provisional polesitter in the Extreme Pro Stock class.

“Hopefully all our bad luck is behind us and we’ll have good air and be able to step it up tomorrow,” he said. “We should’ve run quicker than that tonight; I figured it would’ve been about a .12 or so, maybe even better.”

Pete Berner, Robert Patrick Jr., Matt Hartford and Dean Goforth round out the top five in Extreme Pro Stock, while Mark Martino currently fills the 16th position just one-tenth-of-a-second behind Gahm.

Hines, a recent Pro Extreme Motorcycle event winner, led the field after each qualifying session, but improved from 4.28 to 4.22 in Friday’s last go-round to secure the provisional top spot over Ashley Owens, Ron Procopio, Monte Campbell and Paul Gast. A 4.42 at 161.32 has Eddie Gonder on the bubble for Saturday’s lone qualifying session, beginning at noon (Eastern). Elimination rounds for 16-car/bike fields in each National Guard ADRL professional class will follow.

EVENT PREVIEW -ADRL TRAMS FOCUS ON BATTLE FOR THE BELTS CHAMPIONSHIP

When the 2009 National Guard American Drag Racing League (ADRL) Tour opened at Houston in March, practically every team present

ADRL_PXleader_Scruggs.jpg
Two-time reigning Pro Extreme World Champion Jason Scruggs leads the current Speedtech Battle for the Belts points standings with his record-setting 1968 Camaro. Scruggs is the quickest and fastest man in National Guard ADRL competition with a 3.66-seconds pass at more than 207 mph over the eighth mile.
dreamed of championship glory after surviving a grueling points chase and prevailing in the National Guard ADRL’s unique, end-of-season shootout that’s slated for Dallas this October.

Now, with only two opportunities left to accumulate points toward qualifying for the Speedtech Battle for the Belts, those still in contention, or still hoping to be, will be keeping their calculators as close by as their wrenches during the Aug. 21-22, Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags III at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio. The Ohio event will be followed by the National Guard ADRL’s Flowmaster Dragstock VI at Rockingham (NC) Dragway next month, and then it’s on to Texas for the championship-deciding Battles.

The Speedtech Battle for the Belts will pit the top eight points earners in each of the ADRL’s five professional racing classes against each other in Friday-night eliminations during the LenMar Motorsports ADRL World Finals V at the Texas Motorplex. Points earned in Saturday’s National Guard ADRL race at Dallas will actually count toward the 2010 championship chase.

Everyone who makes at least one qualifying attempt at a National Guard ADRL event receives 25 points and qualifying on top of a 16-car field earns another 16 points (15 for 2nd, 14 for 3rd, and so on). With each elimination-round win paying 100 points (500 going to the event winner) and 50-point bonuses for setting official elapsed time and speed records, each event offers the potential for 641 points. Plus, a 50-point bonus goes to every driver who attends all events in a single season.

ADRL_PNleader_Halsey.jpg
With three Pro Nitrous wins so far this season, Maryland’s Jim Halsey has built a sizable points lead with only two races to go before the championship-determining Speedtech Battle for the Belts at Dallas in October.
Heading into Hebron, only the points leaders in Pro Extreme (PX), Pro Nitrous (PN), Pro Extreme Motorcycle (PXM) and Extreme Pro Stock (XPS) have clinched positions for the 2009 Speedtech Battle for the Belts, while the top three in Flowmaster Extreme 10.5 (XTF) have also guaranteed their inclusion.

Back-to-back reigning world champion Jason Scruggs leads the way in Pro Extreme with a more-than-four-rounds advantage over second-place man Quain Stott and more than seven rounds on Mike Janis in third. Also currently in the top eight are Todd Tutterow, National Guard driver Joshua Hernandez, 2006 series champ Bubba Stanton, Cody Barklage and Frankie Taylor.

The PX Battle field is far from set, however, as Barklage and especially Taylor are well within striking distance of challengers that include Ohio’s own Brian Daniels and youngster Jason Hamstra, both less than 30 points out of contention. With a solid outing in the next two events, along with perhaps a little faltering by those ahead of him, Tommy D’Aprile also could make a run at qualifying, with outside chances also available to Joey Martin, Wes Johnston and Travis Swearingen in the second National Guard entry.

In Pro Nitrous, Jim Halsey, a three-time event winner this season, enjoys a nearly 1,000-point lead over the Al-Anabi Racing triumvirate of rookie Khalid Al-Balooshi, Shannon Jenkins and Mike Castellana. The second half of the current PN Belts contenders includes Johnny Pilcher, Stan Allen, Steve Vick and Halsey teammate Pat Stoken.

ADRL_XTFleader_Glidden.jpg
Defending Flowmaster Extreme 10.5 World Champ Billy Glidden is the only National Guard ADRL racer to have already sewn up the number-one starting position for this year’s Speedtech Battle for the Belts.
Burton Auxier in a fourth Al-Anabi car is next on the list, just 56 points behind Stoken and exactly one round behind Vick. Realistically, only Auxier has a significant chance at breaking into the Belts race, as 10th-place Tim Savell is more than four rounds out of contention, followed by Thomas Myers and John DeFlorian Jr.

Not only has defending Flowmaster Extreme 10.5 World Champion Billy Glidden guaranteed his 2009 Speedtech Battle for the Belts appearance; he’s clinched the number-one seed with a 1,418-point advantage over Gary White, who currently sits just 23 markers up on Jeff Naiser.

Beyond that it’s a big 485-point drop to Todd Moyer in fourth place, with Jake Carlton and Jeff Paulk tied behind him and Chuck Ulsch and Spiro Pappas rounding out the eight-car field. And with more than five rounds separating ninth-place Randy Matlock from Pappas, it appears very likely the 2009 Flowmaster XTF championship contenders have already been established.

Scott Gray is carrying a comfortable 659-point lead over Ashley Owens into the Ohio Drags, but the Pro Extreme Motorcycle class tightens up considerably after that. Brothers Matt and Charlie Prophit are presently third and fourth, with Eric McKinney, Ronald Procopio, Travis Davis and Casey Stemper placed fifth through eighth, respectively.

ADRL_XPSleader_Gahm.jpg
Extreme Pro Stock points leader Brian Gahm will be racing in friendly territory this weekend as the Ohio-based driver enters the ADRL Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags III at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.
It remains close among the current non-qualifiers, too, with Jack Young, T.T. Jones and Mantez Thompson all within 40 points of Stemper and it takes looking all the way down to defending two-time PXM champion Billy Vose in 16th place to find the first rider more than four rounds beyond Belts contention.

Four-time event winner Brian Gahm of Lucasville, Ohio, has a nearly insurmountable grip on first place in the inaugural year of the Extreme Pro Stock class with a 1,255-point advantage over John Montecalvo. Doug Kirk is next, with Jason Collins, Elijah Morton, Matt Hartford, Cary Goforth and Robert Patrick Jr. following.

Jeff Dobbins would need to overcome a 105-point deficit to oust Patrick from the Belts race, with Dean Goforth (Cary’s father) just over two rounds outside the field.

The National Guard ADRL has been attracting record crowds throughout 2009 with the quickest, fastest, wildest eighth-mile show in the world, but with so much now riding on the outcome of the Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags III, fans in the Buckeye State are also guaranteed to witness pivotal moments in the 2009 Speedtech Battle for the Belts points chase.
