CREASY READY FOR BIG PUSH

rock_burnout.jpgThere are a lot of factors that
go into winning an IHRA Nitro Funny Car world championship. You have to have a
strong, consistent car, you need a reliable motor that does not consistently
harm itself. You need a driver who doesn't make many mistakes, a crew to back
him up and, most importantly, for the breaks to fall your way. Dale Creasy Jr.,
the Beecher, Ill. resident who won the last two IHRA Nitro Funny Car
championships, felt he was able to win both world championships because, as he
put is, "everything came together and fell into place."

This season things have not worked
out quite as well. Creasy, who won an astounding six Ironmen last season, has
failed to find the Winner's Circle in 2008. He fell to current points leader
Steven Macklyn in the final round at the season-opener in San Antonio. He
followed that up by falling in the first round to eventual event champion Matt
Hagan at the IHRA Spring Nationals in Rockingham.

2ND ANNUAL WORLD FOOTBRAKE CHALLENGE IN BRISTOL THIS WEEKEND

The second annual World Footbrake Challenge presented by Jeg’s and BTE will
commence this weekend, May 23-25 at Bristol Dragway in Bristol, TN. The event,
which boasts a huge $100,000-plus purse will play host to hundreds of top-notch
bottom bulb competitors from across the United States.

In last season’s inaugural event, two competitors normally known for
their success in the Super Pro ranks beat the odds to overcome one of the most
talented fields of footbrake competitors ever assembled. There, Tennessee racer
Scotty Richardson defeated Alabama’s Luke Bogacki for the $50,000 prize.
Carrying the flag for the Footbrake crowd was North Carolina hitter Chris Plott,
who won $10,000 in Friday’s opening event.

SUPER CHEVY SHOW WOWS MMP

AirborneExpress.jpg
The O'Reilly Super Chevy Show had its run at Montgomery Motorsports Park
with beautiful weather, large crowds and great racing.

Ken "The Kid" Walsh from Purcellville, VA won the Aeromotive Nitro Coupe
Challenge in a close final over 2007 champ Jerry Rhodes of Southside,
Alabama.

Rhodes had qualified ahead of Walsh, but Ken found a problem in his
supercharged beast of a power plant which had limited his power.  He came out on
race Sunday with what amounted to a new Nitro Coupe and a good attitude.  He
marched through the field until he met Rhodes in the fianl.  Walsh had an .062
light and roared to a 4.082 at 179.3 mph.  Rhodes could only manage a 4.811 as
he had traction issues and shut his '64 Vette Aeromotive Nitro Coupe off
early.

NHRA CIRCLE TRACK CHALLENGE WAS A BLAST FOR NHRA DRIVERS

Former USAC champion Doug Kalitta taught his drag racing comrades a
lesson in why they should stick to the straight-line. He won last Saturday’s
12-lap NHRA Circle Track Challenge at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Kalitta, who started ninth in the 15-car field of NHRA all-stars, took
the lead from Greeneville's Allen Johnson on lap 10 after stalking him
for several laps around the .533-mile oval.

“I tell you, it was tough out there,” he said. “I had to work hard out
there but I had a lot of fun. I really appreciate the fact that I had
the opportunity to do this.

“I had to get up in the wall a little to get past Allen and I tell you,
it was so much fun. I was just glad to be able to get around these guys
at the end.”

PEGGY LLEWELLYN RETURNING

Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Peggy Llewellyn confirmed she will return to the tour in 2008 and for her,

the sooner will be better.

“I'm doing some networking,” Llewellyn said. “I am borrowing a bike
from Matt Guidera and we're trying to put something together. I figure,
if I get out here and show my face people will know I want to race.”

Llewellyn has one national event to her credit with a triumph at last
season’s NHRA Fallnationals in Dallas, Texas aboard Karl Klement’s
Buell. The team owner elected not to renew her contract for 2008 and
instead signed Angelle Sampey.

NEFF TAKES FRESHMAN SEASON TO NEXT LEVEL

Mike Neff and his Old Spice Ford Mustang had to battle one of the toughest Funny Car fields,

Just
goes to show you how quickly a driver can progress. Two races ago, Mike
Neff couldn't win a round of competition. Now he can't seem to win a
final round.

Mother Nature and a surprise mechanical problem
in the final round at Bristol Dragway en route to an upset loss to
Melanie Troxel.

As the Old Spice Ford Mustang pulled up to stage Neff’s team was unable
to lift his Mustang body. As a result crew chief John Medlen was unable
to make critical engine adjustments to his BOSS 500 Ford motor. At the
top end Neff’s Mustang erupted in flames as Troxel pedaled and drove
past him.

Look out NHRA Pro Stock top 10 hopefuls, Dave Connolly is closing in.

Dave
Connolly needs to average a semi-final finish foer the rest of the
first phase of the countdown. Thus far he's won one and finished
runner-up in another. He's currently 14th and 83 points out of tenth.
The victory brought him up four positions in the standings. (Roger Richards)

He began chasing POWERade Series points five races after his
challengers, making his 2008 debut three races ago. But he and the
Cagnazzi Racing Charter Communications Chevy Cobalt team
showed little rust.  Connolly was runner-up two weeks ago at St. Louis
and then he drove into the Thunder Valley Nationals winner’s circle
Sunday at Bristol Dragway following a long day of waiting out rain
delays.

The victory, the 18 of his career in 31 final rounds, boosted him into
14th place with 244 points and he is just 83 out of 10th – the final
position in the six-race Countdown to the Championship that doesn’t
begin until September.

TRIBUTE FROM NASCAR

During Saturday evening’s telecast of the Sprint
All-Star Race on “Speed,” announcer Darrell Waltrip, commenting on the rapidity
with which Kyle Busch was driving away from the field after a restart, said, “I
don’t know whether he spun the tires, but he sure looks like John Force!” Nice
to see that someone who might be a casual fan of the quarter mile is well aware
of the exploits of our favorite drag racing competitors.

SCHUMACHER’S REAL MOTIVATION

Image

Tony Schumacher has heard Rod Fuller's Dark Side comments. He's got another nickname for Fuller to call him.

Here’s a note to those who race Top Fuel. If you get Tony Schumacher
fired up, you’ll pay the price. If his tuner Alan Johnson gets fired up
– the price will really be steep.

Schumacher banked his third victory of the season Sunday in the rain
plagued O’Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway. He came
into round eight of the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series holding the
Top Fuel point lead, and leveled Larry Dixon in the finals with a
4.555-second pass at 306.81 mph.

FEMALE FUNNY CAR WINNERS CLUB NO LONGER EXCLUSIVE

ashley_versus_melanie.JPG

ImageIf Melanie Troxel was looking for a way to trump Ashley Force’s
monumental victory in Atlanta, she did so in Bristol. Not only did
Troxel beat Ms. Force in the second round, she went on to become the
first female to win in both NHRA-sanctioned nitro categories.

Troxel defeated Force, 4.820 to 4.863, in a race in which she clearly
had to manhandle her ProCare RX Dodge Charger in the second-half of the
run.

Troxel downplayed the gender hype in their match.
