CALVERT RACING PARTNERS WITH NEW SCEDA CATEGORY

The Southern California Drag Racing Series (SCEDA) is pleased to announce a marketing partnership with Calvert Racing Suspensions for the 2010 racing season. The SCEDA Series Stock - Super Stock Combo class will now be known as the Calvert Racing Suspension Stock – Super Stock Combo class effective at the series first event this year to be held at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, Calif., January 23rd and 24th.

SCEDA held an introductory running for Stock and Super Stock as one class at the series final event in 2009 to see if it would fit with their current bracket racing format.  The turnout was overwhelming, as nearly double the expected entries showed up to Fontana.  Due to the extreme interest, SCEDA decided to make the class a permanent addition in 2010.  Calvert Racing Suspensions noticed the excitement this new category created and decided to become the title rights sponsor.

HUMPHREYS CONFIRMS FORD, ROUSH-YATES ENGINES

ps_winnerThe off-season has been one of uncertainty for Pro Stock driver Justin Humphreys.

Humphreys, who has competed in the NHRA Pro Stock ranks the past three seasons, was unsure of what direction he was headed going into 2010. Work had been done last year to develop plans for 2010, but those efforts had not proved fruitful.

“We had talked to the Doug Yates at Roush Yates Engines a few months ago and had a meeting with them. We thought we were going to move forward then, but it didn’t end up working out,” said Humphreys, who finished 17th in the point standings last year running a limited schedule. “We got to the point that we were debating on putting our own engine shop together and building our engines in-house. That wasn’t really something we wanted to get involved in.”

A-1 CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY BY MOVING INTO NEW HEADQUARTERS

new_a1_118Fifty years ago A-1 Automatic Transmissions was founded, and the highly respected manufacturer of racing transmissions and torque converter is looking forward to the future by moving into a new 15,000 square foot facility.

Marv “2-Speed” Ripes, the company founder best known for popularizing the use of the Powerglide transmission in drag racing, is still active in the technical side of the company, while day-to-day operations are being captained by veteran racer Alan Bowdish and his son, Adam.

The move to larger quarters was accelerated when a fire damaged the firm’s transmission shop in 2009, luckily sparing converter operations, which were in an adjacent building. Now everything is under one roof at 2826 Kauffman Avenue in Vancouver, Washington. A-1’s phone number remains the same at 360-574-9966.

NHRA'S GREATEST RACES DEBUTS ON FSN

“This is a project I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” said Stephens. “Back in the 1970s and 1980s, I was that guy sitting on his couch every weekend watching tape-delayed telecasts of NHRA national events.”

HAWLEY’S DRAG RACING SCHOOL CONTINUES MICKEY THOMPSON PARTNERSHIP

DSC00830The overall performance of a drag racing tire is important to anyone who puts their hot rod on the track. Consistency is also a big part of the game when choosing the brand of tire for competition. This not only holds true for veteran racers but very much so even for those who are just beginning in the sport.

Now entering its 25th year of training drivers, Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School strives to provide each student attending its school with the same consistency and performance from one driver to the next, during each pass and at the many different facilities where their classes are held.

School founder and instructor Frank Hawley found the choice of tires to be a very simple one for the school when they made the switch to run Mickey Thompson Performance Tires in 2003.
