BRAINERD TEST HELPS SMITH

Mmsmith.jpgatt
Smith and the Nitro Fish Ultimate Gear Suzuki Pro Stock Motorcycle team
spent the Monday after last Sunday's NHRA Nationals at Brainerd
International Raceway making test runs down the quarter-mile dragstrip
trying to determine the cause of their recent mechanical issues. By
Tuesday the problem was solved and they're ready to attack the
quarter-mile at Maple Grove Raceway, outside of Reading, Pa., at this
weekend's 25th annual NHRA Nationals, where he won the event last year.

Smith and the Nitro Fish team, tuned by Steve Tartaglia and racing the
quickest Suzuki on the circuit behind the dominant Harley-Davidsons,
experienced problems during qualifying and the first round of
eliminations in Brainerd, which even an engine change did not fix.

VETERANS DOMINATE IHRA STOCK

To be the best you have to beat the best – and that is exactly what the drivers in the IHRA’s Stock Cummings-SS.jpgclasses are going to have to do come October.

With five world champions already qualified for the new Tournament of
Champions, the field in Rockingham is going to be stout. A handful of
new faces in the championship hunt will look to challenge many of the
world’s best in the Stock and Super Stock categories at the World
Finals in Rockingham later this year.

FORD RACERS IN ONLINE ADS

This time, they’re talking Taurus.

Last fall, Ford Racing’s top personalities in the NASCAR Sprint Cup
Series and NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series gave race fans access
to their behind the scenes thoughts, videos and photos as they test
drove a variety of Ford’s 2009 product lineup.

They’re back once again, but this time they’ll be showing off the new
2010 Taurus and Taurus SHO as Ford officially kicks off “I’m Driving
One,” an online national sweepstakes where one lucky winner will take
home Ford’s latest all-new Taurus in December.

The online campaign officially launches today at www.imdrivingone.com, as well as a variety of Ford, driver and team websites.

“We continue to look for unique ways to utilize our personalities and
racing programs to support the company’s primary goal of selling cars
and trucks,” said Brian Wolfe, director, Ford North America
Motorsports.  “Last fall, the first ‘I’m Driving One’ campaign proved
to be a big hit, both with consumers, and with our drivers, so we
decided to bring it back this year for the launch of the all-new
Taurus.   I think race fans are going to have fun while learning more
about Ford’s new flagship.”

HADDOCK: FOLLOWING TESTING RULES HURT ME

Terry Haddock is about as frustrated as he’s ever been in drag racing.
haddock.JPG Haddock is discouraged because he’s one of many racers who interpreted the NHRA’s testing limitations as assigned to the driver, car and team. The independent racer, who admittedly competes by racing from-race-to-race, is up in arms about a recent clarification of the testing rules by the NHRA.

Haddock was penalized earlier in the year for a testing violation after participating in two IHRA events.

Haddock currently ranks twelfth in the NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel points standings, the same position held by Robert Hight in the Funny Car standings, whose fifth test session of the season as a driver has sparked a raging fire of debate. The NHRA agreed with John Force it was within the rules for Hight to test in the No. 7 Castrol Ford normally driven by Force.

MAPLE GROVE STRIP EXTENDED

When the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series arrived at Maple Grove
Raceway this week, it found a significantly longer racetrack.

A total of 300 feet of pavement was added to the end of the dragstrip
over the summer. With a new 250-foot sand trap, the track, from end to
end, is 4,075 feet long. An additional 400 feet is used for runoff.

The $150,000 project was started in June and, despite persistent rainy
weather, was completed in time for the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals.

ANDERSON’S IS "DRIVEN" TO WIN

Greg Anderson has never had to seek motivation when it comes to drag
racing, on or off the track. If he could, Anderson would find

some way to add hours to the clock.

Last weekend’s 58th career victory in Brainerd raised the bar that much higher for Anderson.

“That win in Brainerd gives me a completely new outlook heading into
Reading,” said Anderson. “I know it sounds strange, but I had started
to wonder if I could still get the job done.  In fact, the day after it
happened, I had to check the paper to make sure I actually had won.

“Now that I’ve broken the ice, I’m just going to go out there and have
fun, seeing what I can do to put a few wins together. To be honest, the
next race can’t come soon enough. I’m definitely going to have more
energy going into this weekend than I have had at any other race this
year, and hopefully this Summit Racing team can have a lot more fun.”
