ANDERSON LEADS ANOTHER KB RACING 1-2 IN QUALIFYING

Different track, different conditions, same story.

Another KB Racing 1-2 in qualifying.

For the third time this season, the pair of Greg Anderson and Jason Line swept the top two spots in qualifying, as this time it was Anderson powering his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro to the top spot Saturday at the 29th NHRA SpringNationals at Royal Purple Raceway.

“We ran great yesterday, then we made some serious changes today and still ran great. So to have a good handle on the racetrack, whether it is hot, whether it is cool, whether the sun is out or whether it is raining, it is a good feeling,” said Anderson, who earned his third top qualifier award of the season and 83rd of his career. “I did a great job yesterday with my car. Jason did a great job with his car today. We have got a fantastic one-two punch between the two Summit Chevys.”

The KB Racing teammates were quickest in each of the four qualifying sessions over the first two days of racing in Houston, with Anderson topping the charts in three of the four sessions. With ever-changing weather conditions throughout the weekend, Anderson’s Friday pass of 6.589-seconds at 210.41 mph held firm atop the Pro Stock charts. Line opened Saturday with a strong opening session to place his Summit Chevy second with a 6.590 at 210.28 mph.

Through five races this season, neither KB Racing driver has qualified lower than third while combining to win all five races, a true testament to the work this team has done to prepare for the new season with a completely new combination under the hood.

“It is still a learning curve, but somehow, someway, we are doing a better job than the rest of them,” Anderson said. “I am not quite sure how, but I am very proud of the team. I am proud of the job we have done. But I certainly don’t feel like we are the baddest dogs in fuel injection, that is for sure. We are still learning every day.

“Even this weekend, when you come here with just humongous vapor pressure, you have humidity through the roof, we haven’t raced these cars with the fuel injection in any kind of condition like this. We didn’t even know if they would start when we came up to run yesterday. But we are learning the cars, just like everyone else.”

Qualified third is Bo Butner with a 6.623 at 208.91 mph, followed by Drew Skillman (6.632) and Allen Johnson (6.635) rounding out the top five.

All of the drivers battled challenging conditions, with high humidity and rain showers sweeping through the area on Saturday. With more storms in the forecast for Sunday, the teams are prepared for just about anything in preparation for one of the trickiest races of the season.

“I am not sure which of the data we are going to use. Is it today’s, or is it yesterday’s? It just depends on what mother nature brings us tomorrow,” Anderson said. “The weatherman has been a little bit off all weekend, so it is hard to say what we are going to see tomorrow.

“With conditions like this, you wait right down to the last minute. You make every preparation you can, and then you may change some parts in the car two minutes before you come to the staging lanes. We watch the weather meter, we watch the track conditions, it’s just part of the game. Thankfully, we’ve got guys that are probably the best at doing that and we will see if we can adapt no matter what happens tomorrow.”

Anderson will open Sunday with a first-round bye, facing the winner between Vincent Nobile and Alex Laughlin in the second round. Line will face V Gaines in round one on Sunday.

“It is really a double-edged sword. I almost hate to have that because you want to be on your game every time you go up there and that (having a bye) can make you sort of relax and get a bit out of your reaction time game,” Anderson said. “Still, I am in the second round barring disaster, so it is still a good thing and I will take the freebie.

“We have got the data that we need no matter what happens tomorrow. I can’t ask for anything more through qualifying. Now it is time to take the gloves off and duke it out on race day.”
