ECKMAN’S EXPERIENCE PROVIDES SUCCESSFUL FORMULA FOR TOM HAMMONDS

Jerry Eckman raced many years in NHRA POWERade Pro Stock and the experience has never come in handy more than it has the last two seasons.

Eckman, who serves as crew chief for Tom Hammonds, is regularly dipping into the log books as he tries to find the right combinations for what can be sometimes unpredictable racing surfaces. He heads into the NHRA Southern Nationals in Commerce, Georgia this weekend with a past win under his belt at the established facility.

Five races into the season Team Hammonds has qualified only once. Eckman explains that the team has been working with new set-ups and trying out new things to find the right combination which has not always presented the result for which they were working toward – a win. eckman_07.jpgJerry Eckman raced many years in NHRA POWERade Pro Stock and the experience has never come in handy more than it has the last two seasons.

“Trying a lot of things to improve [the Chevy Cobalt], we discovered we were going in the wrong direction.  We found a few things that were set-up wrong on the car, and we got that all corrected. You will see a new team in Atlanta.  We will be out there with bells on our toes,” said a confident Eckman.

Eckman testifies that Hammonds is a good driver who is a tough competitor and a formidable opponent.  He says that when Hammonds gets that fire in him he is tough to beat.  That is the fire he would like to see for the competition in Atlanta.

“Last year, Tom ran really well and was fired up in Atlanta.  He was very competitive against Greg Anderson in the first round of eliminations.  When he gets fired up, he can really beat some guys.”
