ADRL POSTPONES TULSA EVENT UNTIL JUNE

The Flowmaster American Drag Racing League (ADRL) presented by the National Guard announced today that its 2nd annual Shelor.com Spring Drags have been postponed from Apr. 25-26 to June 20-21. Although new tickets reflecting the June 20-21 dates will be printed and distributed, all tickets bearing the original April dates will be honored.

“Unfortunately, the entire Tulsa region has been inundated with heavy rain over the past several weeks which has left the spectator parking and overflow pit parking areas oversaturated with water and unusable,” ADRL President Kenny Nowling said. “If it were to stop raining right now and not rain again through next weekend we would still not be able to utilize a large majority of the spectator parking areas. What makes this decision so difficult, though, is the amount of work my staff and the staff at Tulsa Raceway Park have put in distributing tickets and working to establish relationships with local businesses and sponsors.”

It was scheduled to be the ADRL’s first visit to Tulsa Raceway Park, but track owner Dan Guterman said he agrees with and supports the ADRL’s decision to postpone the event. It was scheduled to be the ADRL’s first visit to Tulsa Raceway Park, but track owner Dan Guterman said he agrees with and supports the ADRL’s decision to postpone the event.

“The excitement and anticipation in Tulsa has been building steadily ever since we announced the ADRL was coming to Tulsa Raceway Park, so needless to say, this decision was not an easy one to reach,” Guterman said. “So while we’re looking forward to hosting our first ADRL national event and regret the delay, we support Kenny and the ADRL wholeheartedly. This is the right decision for all parties concerned.”

Nowling recognized that some people may question postponing the event so far in advance, but said he doesn’t want to wait until the last minute, which could result in unrecoverable expenses for the ADRL race teams and fans that were planning on attending the event.

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, every decision I make is done with the best interests of our racers and fans in mind. With fuel costs at an all-time high the last thing we want to see are our race teams and fans making long, expensive trips only to get stuck in the mud and not be able to compete in or see a race,” Nowling explained. “Tulsa Raceway Park is a fantastic facility with a world-class racing surface and I am looking forward to bringing the excitement of the ADRL here in June. I’m confident, however, that acting now rather than waiting is the right thing to do.”

Track manager Denise McDaniel agreed, saying that even if Tulsa enjoyed perfect weather from now until next Friday, perhaps only 50 percent of the spectator parking areas would be usable.

“I’ve worked here for several years and experience tells me the facility will take some time to dry out,” McDaniel said. “We’re expecting a record-setting crowd for our first ADRL national event and we want everyone’s visit here to be one they enjoy and remember positively for a long time to come. So I applaud Kenny and the ADRL for making this tough decision now.”

The next race on the ADRL 2008 schedule is the 4th annual Hardee’s Georgia Drags May 9-10, at South Georgia Motorsports Park. The 2nd annual ADRL Shelor.com Spring Drags will now be held June 20-21, at Tulsa Raceway Park, following the 4th annual Summer Drags June 6-7, in Martin, MI.
