DSR CANOPY STILL UNDER REVIEW

Glen Gray, NHRA’s Vice President, Technical Operations, confirmed to Competition Plus Wednesday, the innovative fully-enclosed canopy Tony Schumacher tested with at Palm Beach (Fla.) International Raceway Jan. 15-21 has yet to be approved for use.

“It is still under evaluation,” Gray said. “We are working with some outside aerodynamic experts and we have had them taking a look at it. We are going through that process still.”

Gray is very familiar with fully-enclosed canopy Schumacher had on his dragster during the test at Palm Beach.

“I had seen it here in Indianapolis a number of times because they (DSR’s shop in Brownsburg, Ind.) are only five minutes away from us,” Gray said. “We let the (NHRA) Safety Safari take a look at it there (at the Winternationals Feb. 9-12), and that is the first time they had a chance to look at it. We obviously wanted them to take a look at for extraction reasons. We had some additional Safety Safari people take a look at it, because we do not have the same Safety Safari crew at every race. We had some different Safety Safari people take a look at it, and I think that was at Gainesville.”

The Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla., took place from March 8-12.

“There is no hard and fast time table on that (about making a decision about the fully-enclosed canopy),” Gray said. “We are going to take the time and do the analysis. We are trying to expedite that as quickly as possible, but when we are done we will be done. We are not going to rush through it.”
