HAMSTRA, MCCOY WON'T DEFEND ADRL TITLE

mccoy_hamstraCar owner Andy McCoy announced Monday that he will not field a race team in 2012 and 2011 ADRL Pro Extreme champion Jason Hamstra has decided to sit out the upcoming season as well. McCoy cited the growing workload at Andy McCoy Race Cars, the fabrication business he runs, while Hamstra was unable to field a team of his own and is hoping for the opportunity to resume his on-track partnership with McCoy in the future.

“It was a difficult decision to make because we love doing what we do in the shop and at the track,” McCoy said. “The people we compete with on the ADRL circuit are great and we will miss the day-to-day competition, but it’s best that we step aside at this time so we can keep up with production and support the race teams that count on us for cars and parts. We are as committed as ever to making cars go fast, they will just be for other people.”

McCoy plans to sell the 1970 Duster-bodied car in which Hamstra registered two wins last year en route to claiming the season-long points title so when he does return, it will most likely be in a new 1969 Chevelle he has on the drawing board.

“We really wanted to race this year tried to get some sponsorship lined up but were not able to get it done in time,” Hamstra said. “I really meshed with Andy and the rest of the team last year so I’m going to wait until the time is right for both of us. I look forward to racing again and hopefully we can keep the team together that won the title last year.”

The Hamstras and McCoys made a formidable team from the outset of their partnership at the end of the 2010 season. They opened the 2011 season with a win at the CarSafe Dragpalooza VII at Baytown, Texas, and never relinquished the points lead. Hamstra won again at Martin, Mich. and made two other finals appearances as well as four more semifinals appearances. He finished runner-up at West Palm Beach, Fla. and Topeka, Kan. and won the championship by 550 points over Joey Martin.

“Winning the championship last year was a dream come true and to share it with my family, the crew and the Hamstras made it even more special,” McCoy said. “Jason is a fantastic driver and working with his father, Kevin, and his mother, Karen, was one of the best parts of the entire experience. We also had great support from Billet Specialties, STT Safety. Hedman Hedders, Hoosier Tire, Penske Shocks, Coan converters, Pack Springs, LencoDrive and1320 Media.”

As the season went along, McCoy found himself busier than ever at the shop. “The better our car performed on the track, the greater the demand on our time to fulfill orders,” he said. “I guess you can say we were the victims of our own success. There are only so many hours in a week and when you have to spend as much time as it takes to chase a championship it’s hard to keep up with the workload, not to mention family responsibilities. We plan to race again, but it won’t be in 2012.”

McCoy said he expects the car to be on the market for only a short time based on the interest he received prior to deciding to park it for 2012. The car made consistent runs in the 3.6 second range in 2011 with a quick time of 3.62 and topped out on the speed chart above 210 mph.
