TEAM JEGS LOOKING FOR HISTORY IN BOWLING GREEN

ps_winnerAny time a member of the JEGS Mail Order team wins a race in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, it is cause for celebration but the next win will be extra special as it will mark the 50th divisional win for the JEGS team that includes family patriarch Jeg Coughlin Sr., his sons, John, Troy, Mike, and Jeg., and third generation racer Troy Coughlin Jr.

Racing in the old Super Eliminator category, Jeg Coughlin Sr. won the NHRA 1969 NHRA divisional event at Windsor Dragway in Michigan. Jeg Sr., won ten more times before passing the torch to his sons, who have gone on to win 38 more events between them. Now, as they celebrate the 50th anniversary of the JEGS Mail Order business, the team is looking for their 50th divisional win and Beech Bend Raceway Park could be the perfect place for it to happen as the Coughlin’s have posted seven wins at the historic facility in rural Bowling Green, Ky.

Leading the charge will be John Coughlin, who as usual will be pulling double duty in his JEGS.com Chevy Cobalt Comp Eliminator entry and his new JEGS.com Top Dragster and Troy Coughlin Jr., who will be behind the wheel of his JEGS.com Super Comp dragster.

“I think it would be awesome to win our 50th [Lucas Oil Series] race in Bowling Green,” said John. “Next to our home track, National Trail Raceway, that is probably my favorite place to race. My brothers and I used to come to this track when we were little kids and it’s always been a fun place.

“We’ve struggled lately a little with our Comp car but now, we’ve got a bit more horsepower and we’ve addressed a few chassis problems that we’ve had,” John said. “We’ve also got this new Top Dragster that I’m really excited about. The car was tested last week and it ran 6.60 at 208 mph so it’s already very fast. Tommy Phillips builds a nice car and we’re really excited to be working with him. I can still win the [Division 3] championships in both Comp and Top Dragster but I really need to win a race or two in order to do it which means I need to start now.”

Winning the 50th Lucas Oil Series event would also be a huge boost for T.J. Coughlin, who is fighting for both a national and a divisional championship in just his second full season in the Super Comp class. T.J. is currently ranked fifth nationally and is second in the North Central division, just 20 points behind leader Tony Elrod. Furthermore, T.J. is battling for a spot in the prestigious JEGS Allstars event which will be held next year in Joliet, Ill. Only the top points earners from each division are eligible to compete in the special event.

“I’ve been fighting all year to win rounds and I’m not done yet,” said T.J. “This weekend in Bowling Green will be critical. I’m in the middle of the points battle but I still haven’t won a race. I’d like to fix that this weekend. My car is good and I’ve been driving well. I just need for it to all fall together. If I can come out of here with a win, that would really help me accomplish all my goals. If I can be the one who win’s the 50th race for JEGS, that would also be a huge deal for the whole team.”

The Coughlin family has won seven Lucas Oil Series events at Beech Bend Raceway Park. Jeg Coughlin Sr., won the Pro Comp title in 1975. John Coughlin won in Top Dragster in 2007. Mike won the Super Comp title in 1989. Troy Coughlin Sr., won in Super Comp in 1991 and Jeg Coughlin Jr., has won three times, twice in Super Gas (1992, 1993) and once in Super Stock (1996).
