Four years ago, Scott Richardson and Scott Weney came together to recreate the “racing in Florida in November” feeling that was so prevalent in the ‘80s, ‘90s and early 2000s. It wasn’t uncommon back then for hundreds of racers to make the trek south and east each year to escape the upcoming winter weather and enjoy some sun and racing with families and friends.
Unfortunately, Scott Weney passed away at that very first race in 2014, but together with Jeff Stange of Strange Engineering, Richardson has continued the tradition and while unofficially known as the Scott Weney Memorial Race, the annual Fun In The Sun bracket race has flourished.
The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series returns to premiere racing facilities during the 17th consecutive year for the upcoming 2018 season.
The season kicks off at Orlando Speed World Dragway, in Orlando, Fla. on Feb. 23-24. During the year the series will feature double header events at Heartland Park Topeka, Mission Raceway Park, Texas Motorplex and Rocky Mountain Raceways. The dynamic series will also feature two stops at Woodburn Dragstrip in Woodburn, Ore. and The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway where the season will conclude on Nov. 1-4.
The upcoming 2018 schedule will feature 44 divisional events with a minimum of six in each of the seven divisions. There will also be 26 regional events featuring the 260-mph Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car classes.
On the heels of last week's bold and bewitching Cometic Gasket Halloween Classic presented by Harland Sharp at Summit Motorsports Park is the announcement of the dates for next year's event.
The Cometic Gasket Halloween Classic XLV presented by Harland Sharp will be Oct. 13-21, 2018 at Summit Motorsports Park - a week earlier than usual - and it's poised to feature even more than the 1,200 entries of this year's event, and even more tricks, treats and titillating racing.
In the final results from the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing at Rockingham Dragway, a handful of home state racers joined the winner’s circle celebration.
Randy Daniels, Grantsboro, N.C., met with Larry Pritchett, Clarkrange, Tenn., in the Comp Eliminator final round. Daniels took home the divisional Wally trophy with a pass of 8.22 seconds at 533.81 mph in his ’07 Pontiac to Pritchett’s 7.914 seconds, 147.49 mph.
In the Super Gas final round, it was Ray Miller III, Spring City, Tenn., ending Joe Eckels day with a winning run of 9.919, 162.08. Miller maintains his championship contention.

The NHRA Toyota Nationals opened on Thursday with Lucas Oil action. Two of the three qualified classes which raced The Strip at Las Vegas completed qualifying.
Back at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis over Labor Day weekend, Stock racer B.J. Graham was the No. 1 qualifier and class winner while racing her Mustang II in the U/Stock Automatic division. This weekend, she stepped up to T/Stock Automatic with the same results.
There is a new champion at the Mickey Thompson Tires Million Dollar Drag Race and his name is John Ezell. Known to his friends as “Johnny Bracket Racer”, Ezell, of Ventress, La., defeated “Racin’ Jason” Lynch in the final round. Ezell earned $325,000 for the win. In an all-dragster final, Ezell was first off the starting line, .003 to .015 and held on for the win in a double breakout. Ezell drove to a 4.879 on his 4.89 dial while Lynch was further under his 4.56 dial with a 4.539.

The VP Racing Fuels NMCA West Drag Racing Series championship season concluded with the completion of the 6th Annual Mickey Thompson NMCA West Coast World Finals at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, California, October 13-15. NMCA West championships were on the line, as racers pulled out all of the stops while battling major winds that caused many of the classes to be run at the eighth-mile race distance. In addition to the straight-line action, the Hotchkis Auto X presented by Nitto Tire put on a great show as always, with many of the drivers competing for the Hotchkis Grand Champion award.
In ProCharger Outlaw Street competition, Johnny Coleman led qualifying with 4.571 elapsed time at 159.55 mph, and he would improve on that with a 4.56, but in the final round, it was Tom Marshall taking the win and the trip to the Aerospace Components Winner’s Circle with a hole-shot victory over Lafayette Williams, 5.121 to 5.119.
Todd Bruce, Doug Gordon, and Thomas Marlow all scored final round victories Sunday evening during the AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals at Texas Motorplex.
Bruce, of Horace, N.D., pulled the upset in Top Alcohol Dragster final round as he attained the starting line advantage, powering his dragster to 5.260 seconds, 275.96 mph, upsetting #1 qualifier Megan Meyer, Olathe, Kan. Meyer had mechanical issues and coasted to 7.110 seconds,141.80 mph.
