where the teams bring their cars to the lanes whenever they are ready to make a run and runs will be singles unless the teams choose to run side-by-side. The track just went "hot" and will be open until it starts to cool off this evening.

The weather should not be a factor today - sunny and seventy degrees is the forecast.

Sunday was a bit of an enigma - the weather was fine and so was the track, with eye-popping runs in almost all the categories, with one huge exception. For some reason, most of the Pro Modified teams were unable to get a handle on the early part of the race track and tire shake was King.

Some of the Pro Modified teams were testing for eighth-mile competition (as were some of the mountain-motor Pro Stock teams), making the problem appear even worse, but it was still surprising to see so many good Pro Modified teams unable to get past the Christmas tree without severe tire shake ending their run. Too much traction was the usual diagnosis.

Hopefully it was just early-season blues. Many of the teams were making their first runs of the 2008 season yesterday after the Friday and Saturday test sessions were weathered out. Today should be better.

The FastNews Network will be here through tomorrow to keep you up with the pre-Gatornationals testing for the NHRA teams and the pre-San Antonio testing for the IHRA teams. Come back later today for the details from today's action - since there are no "sessions," we will arbitrarily break the reports for today and Tuesday into two or three segments as each day progresses. Today's first segment will be the seventh of this year's CSR Eastern Spring Test Nationals presented by Torco's CompetitionPlus.com. - Larry Sullivan

SUNDAY WRAP-UP - RECORD TIMES HIGHLIGHT ESTN TESTING

Image
The quickest run in PSB History.

Image
HAndrew Hines burns out prior to a 6.84 elapsed time.
A quick glance at dictionary.com reveals the definition of mineshaft conditions – ESTN – Day 4. At least two professional classes produced unofficial record times and as for the track records, they took a beating as well during the 9th annual CSR Eastern Spring Test Nationals presented by Torco’s CompetitionPlus.com in Valdosta, Georgia’s South Georgia Motorsports Park.

Andrew Hines left several thousand race fans stunned when he reeled off an incredible 6.845 elapsed time with a speed of 194.41 miles per hour. This run came after an impressive 6.888 elapsed time an hour earlier.

“It's the first and only major test for us this season,” Hines said. “We just wanted to see where we stacked up with some of the other times. Last year we were out here for five days trying to get [teammate] Eddie [Krawiec] a bunch of laps and this year it's just going to be about trying to perfect everything for us. We're not going to try to beat on everything. We just want to see how consistent we can get down the track.”

Image
Robert Patrick drove his way to a run .03 quicker than the IHRA Pro Stock record.
IHRA Mountain Motor Pro Stock world champion Robert Patrick astonished the spectator contingent by reeling off the quickest naturally-aspirated pass in doorslammer history. The Fredericksburg, Va-based driver pushed his Purvis Ford-sponsored Cobra Mustang to a 6.266 elapsed time at over 223 miles per hour.

“We have had an engine on the dyno that shows it can actually run .02 quicker,” Patrick said. “The conditions that we ran this run in showed there was more in there. If the top teams were here, you would have seen more runs like this today. Running the quickest time ever means a lot to us. What means even more to me are the gains that we made over the off-season.

“We tried some things earlier in the day and they didn’t work and we ran a 6.34. But, we tried some other stuff and the car responded in the second session with a 6.27. This was an incredible way to end a day.”

Top Fuel driver Clay Millican may not race in competition this year; but he’s certainly gained the inside track for a testing world championship. The six-time IHRA world champion obliterated the SGMP track record with the first full nitro pass of the day with a 4.585 elapsed time at 323.50 miles per hour.

“I love this place,” Millican said. “I had never been here before this weekend but I’m so glad we came in this weekend. These guys [SGMP staff] have busted their humps to give us a quality race track. We greatly appreciate it.”

Other Top Fuel teams in attendance include Brandon Bernstein, IHRA Top Fuel champion Bruce Litton, Bobby Lagana and Kevin Jones.

Funny Car driver Del Worsham paced the Funny Car contingent with a 4.868 elapsed time with a slowing 294 miles per hour. Other nitro Funny Car testing include Gary Scelzi, Jerry Toliver, Frank Hawley, Melanie Troxel, Bob Gilbertson and Matt Hagan. Bob Tasca III and Tommy Johnson, Jr. were late arrivals on Sunday.

The NHRA 500-inch Pro Stock fraternity was paced by Matt Hartford as he drove the brand-new David Nickens Dodge Stratus to a 6.664 elapsed time at 207.98 miles per hour.

“We knew we needed to get some laps on the car and this really helped us out,” Hartford said. “We learned a lot that will help us next weekend.”

Hartford’s impressive “break-in” lap was followed by an impressive final licensing run by rookie Rickie Jones, son of veteran chassis builder Rick Jones. The second-generation driver was picture perfect as he drove to a straight-as-an-arrow 6.696 elapsed time at 206.89 miles per hour. This marked the first run to the quarter-mile for Jones.

Chris Russo was the quickest of the 30 Pro Modified cars in attendance. His 6.063 elapsed time was the quickest of the fast doorslammers and edged out the 6.079 elapsed time of Kirk Kuhns.

Testing resumes on Monday at SGMP with testing planned for 10 AM until sundown.

SATURDAY - COLD CANCELS SATURDAY PROGRAM

estn_logo-2008_500.jpgThe third day at the 9th annual Eastern Spring Test Nationals presented by Torco's CompetitionPlus.com brings another good news -bad news situation.

Good news, the rain stopped and the track is dry. Several more rigs rolled in yesterday and the Schumacher and Gotham City Racing trailers are among the recent arrivals.

The bad news - it is chilly and there are strong, gusty winds blowing across the track today. Just driving up I-75 was sporty and there's no way to safely race at 200 mph-plus with these crosswinds and a cold race track.

All Saturday activities have been cancelled. However, the weather forecast for Sunday is great - sunny and mid-sixties.

Sunday's schedule:

FRIDAY -  2 p.m. - This time it's official - the plug has been pulled and there won't be any racing today at South Georgia
Motorsports Park.

Though it quit raining, the track was cold and the heavy cloud cover meant that there wasn't enough heat in the track to finish the
drying process.

The band of rain that was staying south of the track finally started moving north and it's raining again.

Friday's open testing will now be run on Saturday and Saturday's Chicago-style competition will now be run on Sunday.

WEATHER HITS SOUTH GEORGIA

About the only thing hitting the racing surface at South Georgia Motorsports Park today will be
wind-driven raindrops.

Hey, at least it's not snow!

Hopes for salvaging at least part of Friday's schedule were raised when the first of two weather systems veered to the East and went across the middle of Florida instead of continuing into Georgia last night, but the second (and stronger) weather system completed its march across Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and the Florida panhandle to arrive at Valdosta at 6 a.m.

Before this second system moves on, it is expected to drop two or three inches of rain on an already-saturated southern Georgia
region, probably washing out Friday's test activities at the CSR Eastern Spring Test nationals.

Race officials hope to make up the missed testing Saturday afternoon and evening and have postponed the Chicago-style head-to-head
racing action from Saturday to Sunday.

That's apparently it for today, racing action should resume at mid-day Saturday.

Don't forget to set your clocks ahead an hour Saturday night - Daylight Savings Time will arrive at 2 a.m. Sunday, rain or shine.

THURSDAY - ANDREW HINES TOPS ESTN PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE TESTING WITH 6.889 ELAPSED TIME

Thursday testing extended in anticipation of poor Friday forecast

Image
Angelle Sampey confers with crew chief George Bryce prior to Thursday's 6.91 elapsed time. This was only her second Buell outing.
Race officials for the 9th annual CSR Eastern Spring Test Nationals presented by Torco’s CompetitionPlus.com decided Friday’s poor weather forecast warranted extending the first day testing by three hours. Several racers were pleased but none more than two-time NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle champion Andrew Hines.

Hines blasted out a South Georgia Motorsports Park [SGMP] track record 6.889 elapsed time at 193.13 miles per hour. This run marked the first time Hines had been into the 6.80s with his Screamin’ Eagle-sponsored Harley-Davidson.

“We didn’t change a thing from our earlier run,” said Hines, who previously belted out a 6.94. “I knew it was a great run going down the track because when you don’t have to correct it, you get the big numbers. I saw our earlier runs and figured I’d run a 6.90. I was just hoping to run quicker than Angelle.”

Hines final pass of the evening surpassed Angelle Sampey’s 6.916 elapsed time at 192.08 miles per hour who was in just her second test outing since converting from Suzuki to a Buell.

Image
Clay Millican established a new SGMP track record with a planned shut-off 4.72 elapsed time.
Clay Millican also posted the quickest run in the history of SGMP when he lifted just past the eighth-mile and coasted to a 4.721 elapsed time.

“A lot of those racers were having trouble finding the right combination early on,” Millican said. “When we pulled [teammate] Bobby Lagana’s car up there we were just hoping it would go down. He went out there and went right down the track. The funny thing is – everyone else did too. There’s no question this is a good race track and has a lot of teeth.”

Millican estimated the car would have been a mid-4.50 had it run to the finish line.

“I had instructions to lift early,” Millican said. “Next time I’m guessing the instructions won’t be the same.”

Danny Rowe (6.023) was the quickest of the Pro Modifieds while Robert Patrick (6.319) paced the IHRA Mountain Motor Pro Stocks. Billy Glidden’s 6.763, 208.88 topped the NHRA Pro Stocks.

Testing resumes in the morning with unlimited test runs beginning at 9:30 AM, EST.
