MONDAY - TORRENCE, TODD, SKILLMAN AND KRAWIEC WINNERS AT CHEVROLET PERFORMANCE U.S. NATIONALS
Steve Torrence piloted his Capco Contractors dragster to the Top Fuel victory Monday at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, the world’s biggest drag race, at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.
J.R. Todd (Funny Car), Drew Skillman (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also victorious at the 18th event of 24 on the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Series Drag Racing Series schedule.
Torrence raced to a 3.757-second pass at 322.96 mph to defeat Kebin Kinsley who lost traction in his Road Rage Fuel Booster dragster at the start of the final. It is Torrence’s first win at the Chevy Performance U.S. Nationals, seventh of the season and 15th of his career.
“This is surreal,” Torrence said. “I don’t even know if I’m realizing what’s going on right now. You come to Indy and you race for a week. This is our biggest race. This is what we race our careers for, is to try and win Indy and it’s a marathon. I’m wore out. Unless you’re a racer and in this situation, I don’t think I can explain the feelings that you get. This is us winning the biggest race of our sport. I said this the other day, you can win a bunch of championships but if you don’t win Indy then you haven’t really done much. So, we’ve won Indy.”
Torrence also won the Top Fuel Traxxas Nitro Shootout, the lucrative race-within-a-race with a $100,000 cash prize. He defeated rookie Ashley Sanford, reigning and three-time world champion Antron Brown and Leah Pritchett en route to the finals. With his semifinal win over Pritchett, Torrence clinched the No. 1 seed heading into the Countdown to the Championship, NHRA’s six race playoff.
Kinsley’s final round appearance was the first of his career. He defeated No. 1 qualifier Clay Millican, Shawn Langdon and the winningest Top Fuel driver in NHRA history, Tony Schumacher, before falling to Torrence.
Todd, an Indianapolis native, powered past Funny Car reigning world champion Ron Capps with a 3.949 pass at 325.53 in his DHL Toyota Camry to better Capps’ 3.923 at 325.61 in his NAPA Dodge Charger. It is Todd’s first career win at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, his second of the season and of his Funny Car Career.
“This was where it all started for me in Jr. Dragsters,” Todd said. “I remember watching Capps as a kid and now I raced him in the final round of Indy. It’s too surreal. Like Torrence said, you win Indy and you know you’ve beaten the best in the sport. Ron Capps and those guys out there are the best in the sport.”
Todd picked up wins against Brian Stewart, veteran Cruz Pedregon and, Tim Wilkerson who crossed the center line in the semifinals before taking home the Wally. He’s secured the No. 9 spot heading into the Countdown to the Championship. Capps took out 2015 winner Alexis DeJoria, Jim Campbell and teammate Jack Beckman before losing.
In Pro Stock, Drew Skillman ran a 6.676 pass at 206.61 in his Ray Skillman Chevrolet Camaro to defeat Greg Anderson’s 6.660 at 208.01 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro on a holeshot for his first Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals victory, fourth win of the season and seventh of his career. His four victories have come in the last six races.
“I cannot speak highly enough of my team,” Skillman said. “They’ve been killing it. Consistency is super hard in this sport and we have a car that keeps repeating. This has been a long time coming. We’ve worked really hard to finally get something like this to happen. There’s a very small list of things I’d really like to do in life. And this is one of them. I want for nothing and this was something that I really wanted to do. And that’s finally done and we’re not done chasing yet.”
On the way to his victory, Skillman defeated Pro Stock veteran Jeg Coughlin Jr., Chris McGaha and rookie and No. 1 qualifier Tanner Gray. Anderson, a four-time world champion and six-time Chevrolet Performance U.S. National winner, raced Kenny Delco, teammate and reigning champ Jason Line and Alex Laughlin before reaching the finals.
Krawiec rode to the Pro Stock Motorcycle win with his 6.858 pass at 196.90 on his Screamin’ Eagle / Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson to defeat Hector Arana Jr. and his Lucas Oil Buell’s 6.886 pass at 195.48. This was Krawiec’s second Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals victory, his third win of the season and 39th of his career.
“We had a great motorcycle all weekend long,” said Krawiec, who was the No. 1 qualifier. “We just needed to keep finessing it and get it better and better and better. I couldn’t be prouder of my crew that I got right now; everybody that puts forth the effort in our program. It’s been nonstop the last two weeks at our shop and for it all to come together and to celebrate here having half of our shop here, it’s just something special.”
Krawiec took down Jim Underdahl, points leader LE Tonglet and Matt Smith before seeing Arana who beat 2016 rookie of the year Cory Reed, Scotty Pollacheck and reigning world champ Jerry Savoie, in the finals.
The 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season continues Sept. 15-17 at zMAX Dragway with the 10th annual NHRA Carolina Nationals and the kickoff to the Countdown to the Championship.
SUNDAY - BECKMAN WINS FUNNY CAR TRAXXAS SHOOTOUT; MILLICAN, HAGAN, ANDERSON AND KRAWIEC NO. 1 QUALIFIERS
Jack Beckman raced his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T to the Funny Car NHRA Traxxas Nitro Shootout victory Sunday at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, the world’s biggest drag race, at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.
In other racing, Clay Millican (Top Fuel), Matt Hagan (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) secured the No. 1 qualifying position in their respective categories at the 18th of 24 events on the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.
Beckman ran a 3.952-second pass at 324.67 mph to defeat Robert Hight who smoked the tires to a 4.360 run at 207.11 in his Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS. It was Beckman’s third Traxxas Nitro Shootout victory, he has never lost in the finals of the Shootout. With the win, Beckman takes home $100,000 in prize money.
“Just getting in to the Shootout is incredibly difficult,” Beckman said. “That’s what makes it exciting, there’s a big litany of ways to make your way into the field but then there’s only one way to get the trophy: You’ve got to beat three of the baddest fuel cars on the planet in one day. There’s always something that makes this Traxxas final round eventful.”
Millican piloted his Parts Plus / Great Clips dragster to his second consecutive Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals Top Fuel No. 1 qualifier, his third of the season and eighth of his career with his track elapsed time record pass of 3.663 at 329.10 on Saturday.
“I’m up here the one talking but (crew chief) David Grubnic is amazing," Millican said. "It’s his tune up. It’s not someone else’s tune up that he’s massaging. And he’s been working on this for three years. Qualifying to me are definitely the guys that working on it and the tuners. I’ve done this for 19 years and they look and talk about things that I have no idea what they are talking about. Everybody knows their job and we all work together to help each other with their jobs.”
Millican will lineup against Kebin Kensley for first round eliminations. Following Millican is Leah Pritchett who qualified second with a 3.667 at 329.50. She will see Wayne Newby in the first round. Top Fuel NHRA Traxxas Nitro Shootout winner Steve Torrence is in third and races rookie Ashley Sanford in round one.
Hagan powered his Mopar Express Lane Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car to a 3.799 pass at 338.77 for his fourth No. 1 qualifier of the season, 30th of his career and fourth at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals. His run from Friday’s first qualifying session set both ends of the Lucas Oil Raceway track record.
“The U.S. Nats is a huge race,” Hagan said. “We won it last year. I guess no one has ever doubled-up and gone No. 1 twice. It’s a pretty tough stat to hear but hope we can make some history tomorrow and do that. I feel really good about the car, about the race track and what we’re doing. I think it’s going to be similar conditions for tomorrow. Today is really race day set-up and our car ran well today and kind of repeated itself both laps. So, I think it was all we could ask for so I’m pretty excited for that.”
Hagan will race Jim Campbell in the first round. In the No. 2 spot is Hight who ran a 3.807 at 333.91 to square off with Justin Schriefer in round one. Ron Capps, driver of the NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger R/T is qualified eighth but has clinched the No. 1 seed heading into the Countdown to the Championship, NHRA’s six race playoff.
Anderson secured his 90th career Pro Stock No. 1 qualifier, third of the season and fifth at Indianapolis with the 6.561 pass at 210.11 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro from Saturday.
“We knew this afternoon was going to be very, very similar to what we are going to see tomorrow made a lot of changes to the race car and it responded perfectly. My Chevy is just happy up here, it loves this place just as much as I do. It doesn’t seem like it wants to or can make a bad run, knock on wood. I hope it’s going to be great the rest of the weekend. We’re always greedy and we always feel like we don’t make the perfect run but I’m telling you these last three runs you can’t pick much off of them.”
Anderson faces Kenny Delco in the first round. Rookie Tanner Gray is in second with his 6.566 pass at 209.88 in his Gray Motorsports / Valvoline Chevrolet Camaro. He will race Deric Kramer while Drew Skillman is third and sees veteran Jeg Coughlin Jr. in eliminations.
Krawiec secured his third Pro Stock Motorcycle No. 1 qualifier of the season, 36th of his career and second at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals with his 6.822 pass at 196.62 on his Screamin’ Eagle / Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson Saturday evening.
“Fortunate for me I’ve had low elapsed time pretty much four out of the last five rounds and tied low E.T. of the first session,” Krawiec said “So, I have an awesome motorcycle going into tomorrow. And right now my main focus is just going out there keeping good reaction time, making clean laps down the drag strip. Lucas Oil Raceway has been good to me so far so hopefully its really good to me tomorrow.”
Krwaiec will face-off against Jim Underdahl in the first round of eliminations. Krawiec’s teammate, Andrew Hines, qualified second with his 6.825 pass at 194.74 on Saturday and he will race Angelle Sampey in the first round. Points leader LE Tonglet has clinched his No. 1 seed into the Countdown to the Championship after qualifying in the eighth position.

SATURDAY - TORRENCE WINS TOP FUEL TRAXXAS NITRO SHOOTOUT; MILLICAN, HAGAN, ANDERSON AND KRAWIEC LEAD QUALIFYING AT U.S. NATIONALS
Steve Torrence piloted his Capco Contractors dragster to the Top Fuel NHRA Traxxas Nitro Shootout victory Saturday at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, the world’s biggest drag race, at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.
In other racing, Clay Millican (Top Fuel), Matt Hagan (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were the provisional No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the 18th of 24 events on the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.
Torrence ran a 3.673-second pass at 329.50 mph to defeat Tony Schumacher’s 3.680 pass at 330.31 in his U.S. Army dragster during the specialty event final round to win the $100,000 prize. It was Torrence’s third Traxxas Shootout finals appearance and first win.
“This is just the icing on the cake; to go to Indy and be able to race in the Traxxas Shootout,” Torrence said. “Thanks to Mike Jenkins and all those guys at Traxxas that put this on. This is an unbelievable deal. When you come out here and you race for 100,000 grand and it’s a race-within-a-race, the competition level is at its highest. It’s the baddest eight guys in drag racing and when you go up there you have to bring you’re a-game every lap and we were able to come out with a win.”
Millican set the Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis Top Fuel elapsed-time record during the third of five qualifying sessions when he put up a 3.663 run at 329.10 in his Parts Plus / Great Clips dragster.
“I’m glad to be up here tonight. I know we have two more runs tomorrow,” Millican said. “I’m just so proud of (crew chief) David Grubnic and (assistant crew chief) Mac Savage and all the guys that work on that car. They’re the ones who should be up here talking, not me. They deserve all the credit, not me. I didn’t even look at the Christmas tree. My job on a run like that is to do everything a driver is supposed to do to give the race team everything they want from a driver.”
Leah Pritchett is in the No. 2 spot with her 3.667 run at 329.50 in her Papa John's dragster from Friday and Torrence is in third.
Hagan leads the Funny Car field heading into day three of qualifying with his track record run of 3.799 at 338.77 in the Mopar Express Lanes Dodge Charger R/T during Friday’s opening qualifying run.
“I think everyone was surprised we didn’t improve,” Hagan said. “Last night was really killer, tonight was pretty killer. You lay the runs over each other and they’re identical. It’s just wild. You’re up there splitting hairs to make these cars run. It’s a real fine line. A little here and a little there makes such a difference. We got us a hot rod though, man. It’s running good, knock on wood, with three good runs in a row. It builds confidence.”
National record holder Robert Hight and his Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro is currently second with teammates Courtney Force following in third and John Force in fourth.
In Pro Stock Anderson ran a 6.561 pass at 210.11 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro in the third qualifying round to take over the No. 1 spot from rookie Tanner Gray.
“I’m a little bit surprised,” Anderson said. “The weather conditions are great out there but not nearly what they were yesterday. Quite honestly, the class as a whole kind of missed yesterday. We knew even though the weather conditions were off today if we made a better quality run we could get close and have a chance. It took a very high-quality run. We made a beautiful run and I didn’t leave much on the table.”
Gray is in the second position with his 6.566 pass at 209.88 in his Gray Motorsports / Valvoline Chevrolet Camaro from Friday evening and Drew Skillman, who has three wins this season, is in third with a 6.570 at 209.33 in his Ray Skillman Chevrolet Camaro.
Krawiec raced to the top of the Pro Stock Motorcycle category with a 6.822 pass at 196.62 on his Screamin' Eagle / Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson during his third qualifying run to bump teammate Andrew Hines to the second spot.
“Our bikes are performing well,” said Krawiec, who won the event in 2014. “We’ve made a lot of different chassis changes as the season has gone forward. It’s been a little bit of a challenge, a little bit of a struggle, but we’ve finally felt that we’ve turned the corner. That’s a tribute to our crew. It takes a lot of effort out here. It’s not one person, I just happen to be the individual on the motorcycle.”
Hines’ 6.825 pass at 194.74 from Friday night keeps him above Matt Smith who ran a 6.840 at 196.02 in the third session and is in the current No. 3 spot.

FRIDAY - HAGAN, PRITCHETT, T. GRAY AND HINES ARE PROVISIONAL LEADERS AT U.S. NATIONALS
Matt Hagan set both ends of the Funny Car track record on Friday of the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, the world’s biggest drag race, at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.
Leah Pritchett (Top Fuel), Tanner Gray (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also lead qualifying in their respective categories at the 18th of 24 events on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.
Hagan ran a 3.799-second pass at 338.77 mph in his Mopar Express Lanes Dodge Charger R/T during the first of three qualifying days and first of five qualifying sessions.
“What a fun run to hang onto,” Hagan said. “The car was out there digging and it’s floating and it’s hunting around. I made a couple corrections but was trying to not do too many. It’s fun to be able to do something like that. I’m just glad to be out there and to be able to do something like that. These cars are just awesome to drive. It’s kind of a throw down right now in qualifying.”
Holding the second position is Robert Hight with a 3.827 pass at 330.96 in his Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS. Following Hight are teammates Courtney Force, in third, and John Force, in fourth.
Pritchett set the Top Fuel track elapsed-time record with her 3.667 pass at 329.50 in her Papa John’s dragster.
“We’ve been preparing for this even missing our Indy test session a couple of different reasons,” said Pritchett who also holds the national elapsed-time record. “Having the confidence and the momentum from Brainerd knowing that this is the coolest session, it feels good. Obviously there’s no guarantee and it’s very much provisional.”
Doug Kalitta is second in his Mac Tools dragster with a 3.682 pass at 329.42. Antron Brown, the three-time and reigning world champion, is qualified third in his special edition Matco Tools / Mello Yello dragster commemorating the extension of the Coca-Cola and NHRA partnership. Brown ran a 3.689 at 329.42 in his new paint scheme that was unveiled during Friday qualifying.
Pro Stock rookie Gray holds the No. 1 spot after his 6.566 pass at 209.88 in his Gray Motorsports / Valvoline Chevy Camaro. He is the youngest of three generations of Grays racing at the event marking the first time there have been three generations in the same category at a national NHRA event.
“It’s just cool to be able to go out there and race with my dad and grandpa,” Gray said. “It’s the first time I’ve been able to do anything with my grandpa like this. It’s a lot of fun and I know he’s having fun. The guys on my car are just doing what we usually do. They’re putting me under a great race car and I’m doing an okay job driving it and it shows out there.”
Greg Anderson is in the No. 2 position with his 6.568 pass at 210.31 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro. Drew Skillman is third with a 6.571 pass at 210.31 in his Ray Skillman Chevrolet Camaro and points leader Bo Butner is fourth.
Defending event winner Andrew Hines is at the top of the Pro Stock Motorcycle order with a 6.825 pass a 194.74 on his Screamin' Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson.
“We needed this cool weather because our guys have been burning it up so much at the shop trying to figure out what we need to do,” Hines said. “The last two weeks have been completely grueling but the guys at Vance & Hines never stop digging and we never stop striving to get to that next level. Right now, we’re real happy putting our street rods one and two. It’s been a lot of hard work, a lot of blood, sweat and tears, literally.”
Hines’ teammate Eddie Krawiec matched Hines with a 6.825 at a slower speed of 193.57 for the second spot and reigning world champion Jerry Savoie is in third.
