TRAVIS SHUMAKE CRASHES FUNNY CAR IN TESTING

Travis Shumake, the son of the late Funny Car drag racing legend Tripp Shumake, was injured on Monday afternoon when the Funny Car he was driving crossed the centerline and impacted the opposite lane guardwall at The Strip at Las Vegas. It was his second run of the day.

Shumake had already completed his licensing requirements on his first run.

On his second pass running the right lane the Funny Car crossed the centerline and made hard contact with the left guardwall. The left side of the race car absorbed the brunt of the damage and Shumake immediately exited through the roof hatch under his own power.

Following the incident Shumake went to University Medical Center and was evaluated before being discharged after five hours of observation with only two cracked ribs on his left side.

“We were only going to make passes to 900 feet the rest of the day to simply get experience. On that second run I crossed the centerline. I hit one of the timing cones and lost steering,” said Shumake. “I was just along for the ride after that. My Simpson Racing safety gear and helmet did their job. I am going to continue to work to get seat time and experience. I have already reached out to the Frank Hawley School to look into getting time in one of his alcohol Funny Cars.”
