Charlie Taylor, a former NHRA world champion from Lumberton, N.C., died Saturday. His death was reported on Facebook by his younger brother and multi-time champion Jeff.

Mr. Taylor captured the '81 NHRA title in Super Stock -- the same year that Jeff Taylor won the NHRA crown in the Stock category. Earlier that year, they had the distinction of winning their respective divisions at the same race, the NHRA Cajun Nationals at State Capitol Dragway in Baton Rouge, La.

In addition to operating Taylor Enterprises in Lumberton for many years, Mr. Taylor had also been a high school math teacher. In 2001, he was selected for the NHRA Southeast Division Hall of Fame.
