VICTOR BRAY DOMINATES AUTRALIAN NATIONALS

Six-time Australian Top Doorslammer champion Victor Bray continued his charge towards a seventh title by winning the rain-interrupted Australian Nationals at Queensland’s Willowbank Raceway. Victor now leads the race for the 2006/07 championship by 45 points after two of seven rounds.

Team Bray dominated the event, with Ben Bray leading qualifying with a pass of 6.056-seconds at 241.81 mph, and Victor breaking the world speed record with a mighty charge of 245.77 mph in the first qualifying session. Unfortunately, he was unable to back up the speed due to rain affecting the strip.

After reaching the finals at Western Sydney International Dragway two weeks earlier, Victor headed to his home track quietly confident that his Castrol Edge '57 Chevy now had the consistency and speed to challenge for event wins. He qualified second quickest with his record-breaking run before the rest of qualifying was rained out.

Variable weather conditions the next day allowed for just one final qualifying session, and Victor's Chev showed its consistency by notching a pass of 6.137, 236.97 while Ben ran a competition-best 6.056 in his Castrol Edge Monaro.

The weather improved on race day and in round one of eliminations, Victor knocked out newcomer Stuart Bishop with another consistent run of 6.250, 233.77, while Ben took out reigning champion Steve Stanic with a blast of 6.183, 239.48.

Things were looking good for another classic Bray versus Bray final, but in the semifinal Ben's Monaro lurched towards the centre line soon after launching and he had to get out of the throttle, handing the win to veteran Gary Phillips.

Victor continued his march to the final by defeating Peter Kapiris with a solid run of 6.165, 232.08 in the semifinals. After the “shoebox” Chevy went through the traps, however, a connecting rod failed, beginning a frantic but controlled thrash to fit a new engine for the final. Concerned crowds, five deep, surrounded the Team Bray enclosure willing the crew on to complete the job within the required time. It was a tense time in the Bray compound.

In the final it was yet another Victor Bray versus Gary Phillips slugfest. These two giants of the sport never underestimate each other, but in the end the power and tune-up of Victor's Chevy held sway, and the six-time champ was one step closer to his seventh title.

Ben Bray, the reigning Top Alcohol champion, had a more fraught time in his Mack Trucks/Castrol Top Alcohol Funny Car. His car broke a throttle cable on the start line in the first round of qualifying. Ben bounced back to make the field, but in one of the closest Top Alcohol races seen at Willowbank, he lost by just 0.08sec in the first round of eliminations.
