The Big Bud Shootout started the ball rolling for the race-within-a-race events in 1982. With the support of Budweiser, the NHRA's Funny Cars accumulated points during the season based on qualifying, and on the grand stage of the NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, battled it out in a shootout staged on Sunday for a $25,000 grand prize. The purse eventually doubled to $50,000.
The specialty event would last for ten years before Budweiser stepped away from the program. We have been in our video archives and found the first five years of the program for your entertainment.
Some call these years - 1982 through 1986 - the glory days in drag racing. This video is a reminder of the aura Funny Car projected back then. You'll see all the big names and even a few up and comers.

Ah, the legendary Fontana Drag City, also known in some circles as Mickey Thompson International Dragway, wasn't considered one of the major drag strips in Southern California but was important enough to establish a role in drag racing's foundation.
The strip, which originated from the old abandoned Gilfillan Field, Played host to strong drag racing shows like the one featured in this classic film featuring the Mickey Thompson 200mph Club Meet. The video is appropriately named "The Gathering of Monsters" and featured the best of the best in Double-A Fuelers back in 1965.

NHRA national event racing for 1978 came to a dramatic conclusion this past weekend with the running of the 14th annual Winston World Finals. It was excitement galore at Ontario Motor Speedway: performance-wise, final-round drama-wise, and everything else-wise. It was a picture-perfect finish for the stellar '78 drag racing season, one that the spectators, racers, officials, and manufacturers will long remember.
The NHRA Winston Professional titles in Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock might have been sewed up long before the World Finals, but that didn't take anything away from stellar pro action. Rob Bruins, fresh off his Fallnationals triumph, put Gaines Markley's potent mount back in the Top Fuel winner's circle when performance star Gary Beck had trouble on the line. Raymond Beadle annexed the Funny Car crown, stopping Tom McEwen in the final. And in Pro Stock, well Bob Glidden kept his undefeated string alive with his Ford Fairmont by topping Larry Lombardo. - Dave Densmore
