CLASSIC VIDEO - 1983 IHRA SPRING NATS

02 02 2012 cptv 1983 ihra springnatsBristol was to the IHRA drag racing fan what Indy was to the NHRA. There might be only one Indy, but there was only one true Bristol race, even though the facility based in Bristol, Tenn., usually hosted two events per season.

In 1978, Larry Carrier decided to cease his procedure of paying the top name drivers money to show up and race his showcase event. Instead, he put all of that unpaid money in a pot and made this event the richest nitro event in the world for the era, even more money than Indy. At $20,000 to win, the IHRA Spring Nationals was the race to win.

The pot was raised to $30,000 by 1983, and in this rare video, you will see the names of the sport including Don "The Snake" Prudhomme, Tom "Mongoose" McEwen, Richard Tharp, Gary Beck, Lee Shepherd and Bob Glidden mix it up with the good ole boys of the IHRA.

What makes this video even rare is the fact there is no commentator, or color offered in the run by run. There are pit reporters, and the sounds of the PA announcer.
